Doongalik Studios announces a new exhibition entitled “Awakening” by Katerina Kovatcheva that will open on Monday, March 2 from 6-9pm. “Awakening” is an interesting showcase of 30 paintings dealing with a variety of subject matters in various mediums.This is the artist’s second solo exhibition at Doongalik, and her audience is always very receptive to her range of offerings. The artist states: “As an artist, I am interested in creating works of art that call for the participation of the audience to the same extent as my own involvement in it. I enjoy experimenting with different textures and media and exploring new mediums and techniques.I love the freedom, spontaneity and energy that watercolours provide for. I enjoy the vibrant bold strokes that oil and acrylic can convey. I love the accuracy of the graphite pencils, charcoal and soft pastels. Every different medium hand technique gives me the ability to explore and express my ideas in a variety of ways. “I am also interested in painting nature and animals, and expressing human emotions, in particular, in my art. I find it my passion to observe things and always find something extraordinary within the very ordinary.” Katerina Kovatcheva is a Bulgarian-born artist, graphic designer and art teacher; who is a permanent resident of The Bahamas, where she has resided with her family for the past 20 years. She has participated in solo and group exhibition in Bulgaria, Bahamas, Slovenia, Kosovo, Czech Republic, Albania, Portugal, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Ukraine, Italy and the USA and has won numerous award and recognition for outstanding artistic themes and settings over the years all over the world. Katerina holds a Master's of Art Degree awarded by the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. After graduation, she worked as a fashion designer, as an artist for a publishing company and as an art teacher. Later, she worked for various hotel chains and institutions around the world; as an independent portrait artist, caricature artist, stage design coordinator and design planner, as well as a coordinator for artistic projects and themes for multiple hotel institutions such as, the RIU Hotel and Resorts in The Dominican Republic, Atlantis Hotel, Paradise Island in The Bahamas, amongst others, as well as with annual events, workshops and exhibitions held both at home and abroad. Katerina is also the designated representative of the IWS (International Watercolor Society) for The Bahamas. Katerina speaks five languages and has an earnest passion for teaching. She has devoted many years to the education of students in many Bahamian Schools, government and private alike, working as an art and craft teacher for all levels of students from grade 1 to pre-college. She has proudly led her students to multiple best achievement national awards for several years. She is currently a teacher at Temple Christian High School where she teaches art and design.
