Festival at Historic Fort Charlotte set for June 9th

The Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Corporation is excited to launch their upcoming in-house event called Festival at Historic Fort Charlotte, a one day fun filled educational festival, on June 9th 2014, which is the Whit Monday holiday. The festival covers the entire day with a plethora of activities beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the morning and going until 11:00 p.m. that night. All activities will take place on the grounds at Fort Charlotte, inclusive of Fort Stanley and Fort D’Arcy. This festival will showcase many of the items and activities that were a part of everyday living in The Bahamas of old.
During your time at the festival, you will understand the important role that the Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Corporation (AMMC) plays in the preservation and conservation of historical artifacts related to the Bahamas while enjoying the music, food and culture of The Bahamas.
The Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Corporation is the Bahamas’ principle heritage conservation agency and is firmly committed to the preservation, interpretation and promotion of monuments, historic sites, artifacts and ecofacts that has national importance to the history and culture of the Bahamas.
The historic Fort Charlotte which was built in 1788 by Lord Dunmore and was named after the wife of King George III will be the backdrop of this festival. The area that is called Fort Charlotte is actually three (3) forts in one; Fort Charlotte to the east, Fort Stanley in the middle and at the western section is Fort D’Arcy. AMMC will create a fun, entertaining and educational family friendly atmosphere at this historic site for the Festival at Historic Fort Charlotte.
There will be games, tournaments, live entertainment and food for the entire family. There will be a variety of delicious traditional and nontraditional Bahamian dishes along with some of the most refreshing homemade beverages on the island. To satisfy the patrons’ sweet tooth, there will be an assortment of delectable sweets and ice-cream.
Ms. Christine Rolle, Site Supervisor, spoke about the array of delicacies that will be offered to patrons of the festival like conch cakes, pumpkin and rice, a variety of fritters and grilled meats.
At the Festival at Historic Fort Charlotte, there will be cultural demonstrations by persons in period clothing scheduled at intervals throughout the day. Most notably, a demonstration of how one would have done laundry in days of old, inclusive of washing and ironing. One of the least noted areas of the fort, Fort D’Arcy, there will be the media house for presentations and lectures, in the state of the art Audio Visual room, on various aspects of Bahamian history. These presentations and lectures will be given by some of the most senior staff members of The Antiquities Monuments and Museums Corporation Dr. Keith Tinker, The Director of the Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Corporation, Dr. Michael Pateman, Senior Archaeologist of The Antiquities Monuments and Museums Corporation and Dr. Grace Turner, Research Consultant with the Corporation.
The Live music for the festival will be provided by the ever popular Royal Bahamas Defence Force Dancing Band and The Urban Renewal Marching Band.
Petty Officer Matthew Rolle of The Royal Bahamas Defence Force Dancing Band says that it is a pleasure working with AMMC and being able to partner with them. Festival patrons will be afforded an opportunity to take extensive tours of the facilities throughout the day, either guided as a group or self guided at your leisure.
The festival will have several special feature throughout the day in addition to the demonstrations, tours and lectures there will be set times where the cannons at the fort will be fired. This exciting addition to the events of Festival at Fort Charlotte will take place at 12 noon and 3:00 p.m. At 6:00 p.m. the now famous Historic Re-enactment will take place featuring a military drill that will feature members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force in authentic West Indian Regiment period costumes. This performance will climax with the cannon firing at 7:00 p.m.
There will be a nominal entrance fee of $5 for adults and $3.00 for children. Chief Curator of AMMC, Mrs. Kim Outten-Stubbs, states that funds raised will go towards the continued restoration of cannons, the amphitheatre, meeting rooms and improved programming, among other things. Festival at Fort Charlotte is the first major event hosted by the corporation at this site for 2014 and is intended to set the mark for future events moving forward as the corporation has a vibrant events committee.
