Fashion mogul and resident of The Bahamas, Peter Nygård 's mother has been commemorated in a new book by Linda McIntosh called, Child of Lamposaari: The Inspiring Story of Hilkka.

A book signing is set for Thursday, November 16th, 2011 at 100% Bible Books & Gift Shop at the Mall at Marathon and is open to the public.

Most people are familiar with Hilkka Nygård as the matriarch of the internationally famous fashion empire founded by her son, Peter Nygård. Peter’s trust in his mother’s uncanny ability to “read” people, and her fundamental understanding of the way in which business works, made her his most trusted confidant. While she was, as Peter often said, the “wind beneath his wings”, she was so in a much larger context than merely that of a supremely talented business woman.

Hilkka was born and raised on the forested island of Lamposaari in Lake Saimaa in Finland, and her childhood in that pristine place shaped her. For all her life, no matter where or how she lived, she remained in her heart a child of Lamposaari.

The stories of her many adventures – the dangers she faced, the courage she showed, her determination to overcome the challenges thrust in her way – are both fascinating and inspiring. She lived in a coal shed and scrubbed floors for a living. She lived in palatial surroundings and entertained royalty. In either, or any, setting she was dignified and cheerful, strong and optimistic.


Like other immigrant mothers, Hilkka Nygård endured, and gave to Canada a lasting heritage and legacy. She was the glue that held her large and diverse family together, instilling in its individual members love and loyalty towards each of the others. She made things right.

Hilkka Nygård’s inner strength, her personal courage and her fierce determination to have her children become independent and self sufficient in a free society, are a tribute to her and to all Canadian immigrant mothers, to the lands they left behind and to the great country to which they came.
