DNA: Government's mixed message on opening borders

The Prime Minister’s national address on the eve of the opening of The Bahamas’ borders to international travel was long, repetitive and confusing. As we have come to expect, the PM in his capacity as Competent Authority basked in his powers while issuing threats to the Bahamian people.

The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) has highlighted the inconsistencies, contradictions and mixed messages contained in the PM's speeches. The latest commentary is more concerning because of the potential impact on the public health and economy of The Bahamas.

The Competent Authority urged Bahamians and residents to avoid non-essential travel. Specifically, the PM observed that the main areas that Bahamians and residents frequently visit are hotspots and are experiencing a dramatic rise in COVID-19 cases. This advice is presumably aimed at preventing another community spread and further damaging the economy.

In the same speech, the PM reaffirmed the reopening of our borders to international commercial travel beginning on July 1, 2020. Many Bahamians question the logic of the PM's recent pronouncements which urges us to refrain from traveling but at the same time, reiterated that individuals from these hotspots experiencing significant rise may come into The Bahamas. The consequence of getting this wrong will be significant for our healthcare system and our fragile economy.

We can only hope that the protocols put in place will be sufficient to protect us from another surge. We urge those in the hospitality and tourism sectors to follow the established protocols and exercise caution as they interact with international visitors. May the Lord keep, protect and cover our people in the days ahead.
