111 to contest 41 House of Assembly seats

One hundred and eleven persons have nominated to contest the 41 seats in the House of Assembly when general elections are held on Wednesday, May 2, 2007.
The incumbent Progressive Liberal Party nominated 39 candidates, the Free National Movement selected 41, the Bahamas Democratic Movement (BDM), 16 and the remaining 15 candidates are Independents.
Parliamentary Commissioner Errol Bethel said 150,799 people registered for the election, with over 20,000 deciding to secure their franchise during March, mere days before the April 4, 2007 dissolution of Parliament.
According to Mr. Bethel, 101,600 were registered in New Providence, 24,177 in Grand Bahama and 25,022 in Family Island constituencies.
A Parliamentary Registration Constituency Summary shows that Blue Hills has the highest number of registered voters with 4,716, followed by High Rock with 4,456. The constituency with the least number of registered voters is MICAL (Mayaguana, Inagua, Crooked Island, Acklins and Long Cay) with 1,287.

The figures for this general election is an improvement of 6,041 over the May 2002 general elections when there were 144,758 registered voters, with 97,768 registered in New Providence alone.
In 2002, the PLP polled 66,897 votes, the FNM tallied 52,803, the Coalition plus Labour collected 2,755, BDM mustered 452, Our Survivors got 10 votes, the Bahamas Constitution Party managed 12 votes and Independents collected a whooping 6,272 votes, resulting in the election of four Independents to the House of Assembly.
There were 129,201 votes cast in the 2002 general elections, which represented 90.2 per cent of the total registered voters.
But in addition to the 129,201 votes cast, there were other votes cast for an overall total of 130,536. However, these comprised rejected votes (1.129) and protest votes (206).
