"Unauthorized and Frivolous Use of a Government Ambulance in Marsh Harbour, Abaco" says Bahamas Ministry of Health Statement

Nassau, Bahamas - The Ministry of Health, Department of Public Health wishes to inform the Public that on Sunday, 14th June 2015, the Department of Public Health was informed that there was a report on Facebook that an Ambulance under the management of the Public Hospitals’ Authority in Marsh Harbour, Abaco was used to transport a High School Graduate to her School Prom on Saturday, 13th June 2015.

As a result of the information received, an immediate investigation by the Department was carried out to verify the accuracy of the Report. Subsequently the Officer who participated in the matter was asked to submit a formal report regarding her involvement in the unauthorized use of the Emergency Medical Vehicle for Non-Health related activity.

On receipt of the signed report by the nurse outlining her involvement, the Ministry of Health, in accordance with the Bahamas Nurses Union Agreement 22.04, Public Service Commission Regulation 43 and General Orders 1041, has placed the Officer on Administrative Leave with effect from 17th June 2015 pending the outcome of a full investigation of the matter.

The Ministry of Health wishes to make it patently clear that there is zero tolerance for such miss-use and abuse of public resources in the Ministry, inclusive of the Department of Public Health and Public Hospitals’ Authority, while noting that, at the same –time, there could have been a real need for Emergency Medical Response, which would have been delayed by this frivolous activity.
