Condolences on the passing of Jim Duncombe,
Sporting Legend
2015 Hall of Fame Inductee, and Cultural Icon
On Sunday, 28th December, 2020, The Bahamas lost a sporting giant and trailblaizer in the person of Jim Duncombe, affectionaley called – The Swing Doctor.
Mr. Duncombe was a gifted individual who epitomized the characteristics of someone with a personal drive and determination to succeed. Prior to establishing himself as one of the country’s elite golfers, Jim was a musical entertainer and singer who became the lead singer of the famous King & The Knights Group which entertained both locals and visitors far and wide.
Once Duncombe was introduced to the sport of golf, his unique ability for long straight drives quickly became noticed. Celebrities and professional athletes such as Michael Jordan, Sylvestor Stallone, and former United States President, George H.W. Bush, who often visited The Bahamas, came to rely on Duncombe’s keen sense of coordination to diagnose and develop their swing. The Swing Doctor ensured that as many would obtain the benefit of his guidance and proudly leave their round on the course with more birdies than pars.
Jim Duncombe excelled as a national athlete and coach, and his passion for seeing others, particularly young people learn and excel in the game became an acquired hallmark. As a result of his drive, Jim joined the athletics program at the University of The Bahamas, where he enthusiatically shared his knowlege of the game to develop future golfers for the University, and by extension the country.
In 2015, Duncombe’s outstanding work and dedication to the development of sports was recognized at a national level. He was nominated and inducted to the prestigous ranks of the National Sports Hall of Fame. Having attained the highest recognition in sports, Jim is regarded as a role model for other sportsmen, and will be remembered as a substantial contributor to the advancement of sports in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Jim has made his mark, and paved the way for many others. For Jim’s life and work, our nation, particulary, the communities of Sports and Culture are thankful and he will be sorely missed.
The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture extends condolences to the family of the late Jim Duncombe, to The Bahamas Golf Federation, the Sports and Cultural Communities, and to the nation at large, on the loss of a ‘Giant of a Man.’
May his soul rest in peace.
