FREEPORT, Grand Bahama - Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, on September 19, welcomed the CEO of NewCo, Damian Blackburn.
Mr. Blackburn and his team are on island for two days to carry out a recruitment exercise in which they hope to fill some 30 positions in the customer service area of the new company.
Also present for the press conference were: Harcourt Brown, Senior Undersecretary for the Ministry for Grand Bahama; Ian Rolle, president of the Grand Bahama Port Authority; Patrice Thompson, Human Resources; and Diane Sands, Public Relations.
The Minister said in April 2014, "the Cellular Liberalization Task Force was formed by the government with the objective of preparing conditions and charting the way forward for the liberalization of the cellular industry here in The Bahamas. After a lengthy process, the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) announced that Cable Bahamas emerged as the successful bidder.
"Under the terms of the agreement," the Minister further stated, "HoldingCo, a 100 percent-owned Bahamian company, will have the majority interest.
"This, ladies and gentlemen, is once again a clear demonstration of the Government's continued efforts to further develop and diversify our economy, while ensuring that the interest of The Bahamas and the Bahamian people are protected by putting Bahamians first in all that we negotiate and do."
He said it was a pleasure to welcome the team and "I encourage you to capitalize on the economic potential that exists in Freeport and the surrounding area, and to join hand in hand with the government, the Grand Bahama Port Authority and all our stakeholders as we chart a new course and chapter in the economic development of Grand Bahama."
Mr. Rolle said he was pleased with the new cellular company as the Grand Bahama Port Authority will soon release information on Freeport’s becoming a Smart City, where telecommunications will play an important role.
