Nassau, The Bahamas – A new Volunteerism Program, is set to launch in The Bahamas.

Barry Rassin, Committee Chairman, announced plans for the new initiative during a press briefing at Government House Monday, March 9, 2020.

Described as an ambitious, exciting and bold initiative, Mr. Rassin said the program is intended to bring together charitable organizations to begin the process of coordinating efforts towards one direction.

“We want to help every individual find the right place for them to feel comfortable about helping somebody. It might be part of a club, an organization it might be doing something on your own to help people. We want to be the catalyst to help people to figure that out, get with a group, or do the right thing for other people,” said Mr. Rassin.

He said although the passage of Hurricane Dorian wreaked unimaginable havoc and devastation on Grand Bahama and Abaco it became the catalyst to bring into intense national focus, indescribable acts of bravery, generosity and kindness by residents on these islands, by Bahamians and the world.

“The value of volunteerism or the power of volunteers cannot be overestimated as was evidenced in The Bahamas post-Dorian. This fact brought home the realization of the urgent need both to reintroduce that spirit of volunteerism in The Bahamas, as well as to harness, recognize and reward ongoing volunteer efforts in order to promote and sustain a culture of volunteerism.”

The Most Hon. Cornelius Smith, Governor-General, who serves as patron of the Volunteer Bahamas Movement, is the brainchild of the initiative.

Some 500 students are expected to attend the launch set for Monday, March 16, 2020 on the lower grounds of Government House. Government officials, charitable workers and representatives of the religious community among others are also expected to attend.

Mr. Rassin said it is anticipated that the launch will catapult The Bahamas into the limelight of the world for maximizing the incredible talent and strength of tens of thousands of volunteers.

The committee comprises: Bishop Delton Fernander, Anita Bernard, Consultant to the Governor-General; Jack Thompson, Permanent Secretary; the Hon. Mark Humes, MP for Fort Charlotte; Sherrilyn Wallace, Deputy Permanent Secretary; Alicia Robinson, Jeffrey Beckles, Diane Phillips and Anthony Newbold.
