Delivering his address via Zoom (the event was held via Zoom in order to adhere to the health and safety protocols established by the Ministry of Health to reduce/limit the community spread of COVID-19), Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell, who has remit for the Community of Persons with Disabilities under his portfolio, applauded the Club for being a “Trailblazer Club” adding that its formation was “an exciting and wonderful opportunity” to further promote a more disability-inclusive Bahamas.” Chartered on June 13, 2021, The Bahamas Integrated Toastmasters Club, 7820731, is a diverse Club with its leadership and membership comprising Persons with Disabilities (including those with audio, visual and physical disabilities) integrated with those non-members of the Community of Persons with Disabilities. “It is truly noteworthy that you are indeed a Club of diversity. You are all reminded of your Club’s aim, which is: ‘To bring more awareness to the creativity, capability and capacity of the Community of Persons with Disabilities and to demonstrate that disability does not mean inability.’” Minister Campbell told Club members that their theme: “Developing Leaders by Embracing Diversity” mandates them to protect disability rights, promote responsibility, ensure accessibility, encourage inclusion, and to advance equal opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. “As your Club is based on diversity and inclusion, you would be remiss if you do not/did not familiarize yourselves with the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities) Act, 2014, and the Articles on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to which The Bahamas is a signatory. “As you focus on leadership and communication skills for Special Needs Adults, I encourage you to provide a supportive and positive learning experience where members are empowered to develop communication skills resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth and development for all.” Minister Campbell said it was his understanding that Toastmasters Clubs have inherent goals as outlined in the organization’s manual. He had a number of recommendations for The Bahamas Integrated Toastmasters Club to also consider. “As you achieve your goals, always ensure that programmes and initiatives are designed and incorporated for the following: *Accessibility – Ensure that all Club Members have access. *Empowerment – Encourage all Club Members to always perform at their optimum levels. * Inclusion – Ensure that Persons with Disabilities are always considered, included and involved in the Club and its activities. “I challenge you as leaders and members to work together to make this Club the best Toastmasters Cub in the region. I know you can do it. I also assure you of the Government’s pledge and commitment to continue to advance, advocate and promote the inclusion of the Community of Persons with Disabilities,” Minister Campbell added.
