Statement by Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis on the passing of Rev. Charles Sweeting, President Emeritus
The Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church
It is with sadness that the country learned of the passing of Rev. Charles Sweeting, who devoted his generous spirit and long life to the spiritual and national development of The Bahamas. He was a man of enormous integrity.
Rev. Sweeting was best known as a devout Methodist, who served in many capacities in his faith community, including as a pastor, spiritual leader and eventually as President of The Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church.
His devotion to his beloved Queen’s College began as a student, where he became Head Boy in 1959. He served as a Religious Education teacher and became the first Bahamian Alumni Principal, serving from 1979 to 1994.
Rev. Sweeting also served for a number of years as Chairman of the Board of Governors. In honor of his service to Queen’s College, one of the quadrangles at the school was named: The Rev. Charles A. Sweeting Leadership Quad.
Rev. Sweeting was an exemplary man of faith, which was evidenced in his commitment to the spiritual, educational and social development of The Bahamas. It is with gratitude that even as we mourn his passage, we celebrate his legacy and tremendous contributions to national life.
On behalf of the Government and people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, I extend heartfelt condolences Rev. Sweeting’s family and to The Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church. I also extend my personal condolences, and that of my wife, Patricia.
May he rest in eternal peace.
