Now, as the firm continues to mark its evolution of legal excellence, it also celebrate the accomplishments of one of our own. Jeanne Thompson, who was the 3rd Bahamian woman to be called to the Bahamas Bar, is a consultant at Halsbury Chambers and is the most senior practicing female attorney in the country. Today, she continues to make history, having served as a member of the Bahamas Bar for 50 years. Born in Nassau, Jeanne Thompson began her education within the local public school system eventually completing her schooling at the Wolmer’s Girls’ School in Kingston, Jamaica. Upon completion of her formal education, Thompson returned to the Bahamas and began working as a Journalist with The Nassau Guardian from 1974 to 1978. During her time in the media, she became responsible for co-authoring the country’s first Bahamian Soap Opera “The Fergusons of Farm Road” as well as the popular Radio Soap Opera “Sam Finley’s Sandcastle”. In 1978 however, Thompson made the decision to enter the legal realm and took a leave of absence to pursue a degree in Law. Her stellar legal career, which spans 5 decades, began with her call to the English Bar in November 1964. She was subsequently called to the Bar of The Commonwealth of the Bahamas in January 1965. Jeanne Thompson is a member of the Honorable Society of the Middle Temple. Thompson commenced the practice of law in the Chambers of Dupuch & Turnquest under the tutelage of the late Hon. Eugene Dupuch Q.C. and Sir Orville Turnquest Q.C. Later, she joined the law firm of the late Sir Kendal Isaacs Q.C. and was a partner in the firm of Isaacs, Johnson & Thompson. In 1981 Thompson founded her own firm and practiced on her own until her ascent to the Supreme Court Bench in January 2002, where she served until March 2007. Today Thompson continues in the legal field by providing her services to the Bahamas Legal Aid Clinic and as the Consultant Counsel at Halsbury Chambers. During her 50 years of legal service to the Bahamas Bar, Thompson has made a name for herself as a brilliant civil litigator with an emphasis on Matrimonial Law. She is an excellent example of the ability and talent which exists within the legal fraternity in the Bahamas and paved the way for countless female litigators, mentoring and shaping scores of brilliant legal minds.
