Robin Hood (2010): A bold attempt to tell folk lore as accurate to the time period it was set in as currently possible.
The Untold Story Behind The Legend.
A retelling of the origin of the Robin hood legend with 13th century details. As the archer and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and are used as pawns in a foreign plot to overthrow the monarchy. With the country weakened by ineffective rule and an indulgent upper class, the gang of skilled mercenaries with an appetite for all life has to offer sets out to right the wrongs that the working class must endure.
Robin Longstride of an archer in the Third Crusade who returns to England after he finds out that Richard the Lionheart is killed in battle, but finds that the country is under crippling taxation and the people are looking for a symbol of hope. Marion Loxley is a skeptical woman who doubts his motivations as he arrives in the country under the guise and armor of her husband and must learn to trust his intentions toward her and the people of the town. King John is the newly appointed ruler of England who is untested and inexperienced with an ego that he uses to mask the fact that he has absolutely no idea how to be a proper leader and symbol to his people. Sir Godfrey is an agent of the French King who ambushed and killed most of Richard the Lionheart's knights and uses his friendship with the new king to stir up enough unrest to cause a civil war.
Robin Hood should have called the movie Robin Hood Begins and shaved off about half an hour of needless scenery chewing dialogue. The acting is great and the directing masterful, but the production is long and the action is nothing that has not been done better in other movies and television shows about Robin Hood. The fact this the script for this film was originally called Nottignham and would have shown the fight from the Sheriff of Nottingham with Russel Crowe playing both the sheriff and the outlaw would have been more interesting than what I had to sit through. Not one of Ridley Scott's best since it comes off like a bad mix of Gladiator and Kingdom Of Heaven, but I must admit that the attention to detail for this version of the story with era accurate touches was masterfully done and Marc Streitenfeld’s score is powerful. I rate this movie a rating of 3 out of 5.
