Freeport, Bahamas - Katrina Dorsett has been announced as the winner of the inaugural Grand Bahama Youth Film Competition (GBYFC) for her film Cyber-Bullying.

Katrina, a 14 year old student from Bishop Michael Elden, focused on an internationally recognized topic affecting young people around the world.  She says,

“As teenagers it can be hard growing up with peer pressure and bullying. If you have low self-esteem, you can be pushed to the edge like Anna. The story is about killing someone’s self-esteem with words that aren’t said aloud.”

The GBYFC panel judged her film to be an excellent short, dramatic film addressing a serious, contemporary social issue. The film displays exceptional production value in its concept, scripting, videography, editing, musical score, performance and direction.

Cyber-Bullying will be premiered at the 2011 Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival (FLIFF) in Ft. Lauderdale and FLIFF on Location: Grand Bahama.

The GBYFC was created as a component to the 2011 inaugural FLIFF on Location: Grand Bahama to showcase young filmmakers’ work from the island. Following its premiere, Cyber-Bullying will be made available for public screenings and online through the Competition’s Facebook, Youtube and Vimeo pages.

In addition, four runners-up were selected by the GBYFC committee:

Sophie Paine, age 14 from Lucaya International School for “Tourism on Grand Bahama – A Friendly Conversation.”

Sophie’s film was judged to be a well-produced travelogue featuring consistently worthy camerawork on the interviews. It was well-timed and carefully edited with good sound quality, which produced a charming promotional film.

George McInnes, age 16 from Lucaya International School for “Stranded”. The committee found this video production a light-hearted reminiscence of Tom Hank’s “Cast Away”. “Stranded” features journeyman camerawork, a commendable acting performance and good editing.

Clifford Bowes III, age 18 from Georgia Tech University for “How to Talk to Women Bahamian Style”. Using minimal cinema graphic applications, this social satire features video clips of a charming stage performance.

Stephane Anglade and John Silvera, ages 14 from Lucaya International School and The University School for “Emancipation Day, A Conversation.” Good stage setting and a well-performed delivery highlight this 41second video endorsement of Grand Bahama.
