The Grand Bahama Youth Film
Competition was created as a component to the upcoming FLIFF on
Location: Grand Bahama Island to encourage and showcase young
filmmakers’ work from the island.
The competition was designed
for 12 to 18 year olds with a theme of “A Conversation in Grand Bahama”,
intended to be imaginatively interpreted incorporating any idea or event
that originated on Grand Bahama.
There were 18 submissions for
this inaugural year and the five finalists were selected based
on the committee’s four judging criteria: 1. Creativity/Originality,
2. Ability to Deliver a Message, 3.Technical Execution, and 4. Overall Impact.
The five finalists are:
Clifford Bowe III for "How to Talk to Bahamian Girls" George McInnes for "Stranded" John Silvera and Stephane Anglade for "Emancipation Day, A Conversation" Katrina Dorsett for "Cyberbullying"
The following is a synopsis of each film:
SOPHIE PAINE: A CONVERSATION IN GRAND BAHAMA AGE: 14
SCHOOL: LUCAYAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
"This is a short video I shot,
edited, directed, produced and also took the role as the interviewer
for the Grand Bahama Youth Film Making Competition in the Summer of
2011. It includes a short history about Grand Bahama, some pictures and
original video footage that I shot at Our Lucaya and some interviews
from visitors to our Island. The project took 2 days and cost me
99 cents - It was so much fun, and
an assignment I'll neither forgot nor
regret!" CLIFFORD BOWE: HOW TO TALK TO BAHAMIAN GIRLS AGE: 18
SCHOOL: GEORGIA TECH UNIVERSITY
"A down-on-his-luck nerd is having
trouble talking to girls so he receives some help from the Narrator
for picking up a girl in Grand Bahama.
Through four simple steps, the nerd becomes cool and confident but
before he can put this to use, he's forced to deal with Bruno over
a "paying" misinterpretation.

GEORGE McINNES: STRANDED AGE: 16
SCHOOL: LUCAYAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
"A boy riding a boat in the ocean
crashes and ends up on a small deserted island, without food, or water
and being unable to see without his glasses he losses his mind
and develops a friendship with a coconut. While walking he finds his
glasses and sees that Grand Bahama Island is only a a mile away

"We wanted to explain to people
what Emancipation Day is and how it is celebrated in the Bahama Islands. Seafood
and crystal clear waters are part of our existence. Having a conversation
with each other made it easy to explain what Emancipation
is and how it is

SCHOOL: BISHOP MICHAEL ELDEN
“As teenagers it can be hard growing
up with peer pressure and bullying. If you have low self-esteem, you
can be pushed to the edge like Anna. The story is about killing someone’s
self-esteem with words that aren’t said aloud.”
