Freeport, Grand Bahama - Tennis campers attending Coach Nathan O'Connor's Tennis Camp 2013 were treated to a presentation by an EARTHCARE volunteer. The topic, 'Becoming a Good Environmental Steward.' was well received by the young people.
Gail Woon of EARTHCARE spoke about the origin of Earth Day, the upcoming International Coastal Clean-up Day coordinated by the Ministry of Tourism and the Sustainable Tourism Committee, the industrial area of Grand Bahama Island, various types of water pollution, habitat destruction, motor oil recycling, air pollution challenges, climate change, sea level rise and pollution of the ground.
The children participated fully in the discussions. At the end, a round of trivia questions showed how much the children had absorbed.
The Grand Prize winner of the EARTHCARE Trivia contest was Craig Nortelus-Rolle. Second place winner, Allen Russell and 3 third place winners, Chazztin Bowe, Lavaughn Rolle and Larry Rolle, Justin Sapp, also received prizes.
Gail Woon, EARTHCARE Founder was very happy to be called back to work with the students again this summer. "Normally all of the EARTHCARE work stops during the summer because all of the schools are closed. Coach Nathan invited us here to work with his campers again in 2013. We covered a lot of material very quickly.
"We talked about the important topics of air, water, and ground pollution. We also spoke about the significance of Earth Day. The kids were encouraged to participate in International Coastal Clean-up Day coming up this September. The tennis players also learned about the simple things that people can do in their everyday lives to make a difference such as: Conserve water; Walk or ride your bike; Use cars less; Recycle; Change lightbulbs to CFL; Make your home more energy efficient; Compost; Make sure adults maintain their cars; Use solar; Use green shopping bags; Buy used items; Be active in your community; ; Turn off lights and unplug appliances when not in use; Donate used clothing; Be a good example for your peers. It was fun and we hope that Coach Nathan will invite EARTHCARE back next summer!"
Coach Nathan's Tennis Camp began in July and will continue in August. The campers learn about tennis, golf, nutrition, exercise, responsibility and the environment. The activities other than tennis include a day at the beach, excursions to the library and games. Coach can be contacted at the Grand Bahama Tennis and Squash Club for more information.
