By Organization for Responsible Governance
Nov 23, 2016 - 4:49:18 PM
(Statement) The Campaign for the Bahamas is a
rallying cry to fight for a positive and sustainable future for our country. Our
mission is to unite Bahamians through positive change and the only way for that
change to happen is if we stand together and ensure our collective voices are
heard.
The Campaign for the Bahamas
commends our partner OurCarmicheal in the nation-building work they are doing
through their BlackOut March scheduled on Friday November 25th, 2016.
Peaceful demonstrations are democracy at work, and the engagement of diverse
voices from all sectors – the citizenship, civil society, private and public
sector – is crucial to creating a free democracy that upholds the rights and
happiness of all.
Foremost on their list of
concerns, the organizers of the Blackout have requested the immediate tabling
of the revised Freedom of Information Bill. The passage of a robust Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA) is essential to empower Bahamians and keep the
government honest, and it is one of the Campaign for the Bahamas’ most pressing
objectives. OurCarmicheal has been a steadfast partner in the movement to pass
a strong FOIA by the end of year, joining with The Campaign and 17 other groups
to recommend ways to make the bill free and fair.
At the Blackout March we will
stand with our partner to again call on our representatives and leaders to make
FOIA a priority. We will be hosting a booth at Rawson Square where participants
can sign a petition to advance The Freedom of Information Act and/or send
letters to their MPs to demand change. We will also be lending assistance in
manning the voter’s registration booth.
There are so many ways to get
your voice and the issues that matter heard. As a non-partisan, apolitical
organization we support all peaceful avenues to bring power to the people. Whether
you vote, pressure your MP, or demonstrate, we invite all our supporters, all Bahamians,
and all persons passionate about the future of this country to be a part of the
movement to stand up for positive, sustainable change. Let’s show them why
#WeMarch.
