Devoted James Bond fans celebrated the 50th anniversary of the film Thunderball in Nassau over the weekend. The Ministry of Tourism confirmed that a group of 40 converged on Nassau from nine countries, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the United States for the occasion. Several of them are members of Bond fan clubs in their respective countries. “This film starring Sir Sean Connery has done wonders over the past five decades in showcasing the beauty and intrigue of our islands,” said Craig Woods, the Bahamas Film Commissioner. “Our tourism and culture are large parts of what makes Thunderball so special. The producers brilliantly weaved in the local flavor such as junkanoo, reef diving and top entertainers such as King Erisson and the Freddie Munnings Band into the spy thriller.” Mr. Woods said the Bahamas Film Commission was eager to assist the group in their 50th anniversary celebrations. For several of the participants, this week’s visit is their third to Nassau over the past five years. They were last in Nassau in 2012. The group’s present itinerary will take them on tours to see many of the film locations used in Nassau/Paradise Island for Thunderball and other Bond films made in part in The Bahamas. Thunderball is the fourth film in the James Bond franchise. It was release in 1965 and filmed extensively in Nassau and Paradise Island. For 50 years, Thunderball has been unquestioned as the most successful Bond film ever. Not until recent months has Skyfall begun to be considered its rival. Thunderball raked in just over $141 million at the box office worldwide. Today, the amount would be equal to more than $1 billion. Skyfall’s receipts are in the same neighborhood.
