NAGB seeks artwork by Brent Malone

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas has begun the first phase of the development of a major retrospective exhibition of the work of the late R. Brent Malone. The exhibition will be curated by Bahamian art historian and educator Dr. Erica James and will open in 2015.

In preparation for the exhibition, the gallery requests that any person who owns work by Brent Malone and is willing to have it included in the exhibition and/or the accompanying catalogue, to please contact Dr James with the following: a basic photograph of the work, its date, title and medium (if known), along with the owner’s name and contact information. All images and information provided will be held in the strictest confidence.

If a collector is unable to provide an image of the work(s), NAGB staff can be dispatched to photograph work(s) upon request. Please arrange through Dr James at ericamjames@gmail.com and contact her directly with any questions or concerns.

Brent Malone (1941-2004), who is sometimes referred to as the ‘Father of Bahamian Art’, began his career as a potter and became one of the central figures of the local Bahamian art movement.

During his lifetime, his galleries, including the Loft Gallery, Matinee Gallery, Temple Gallery and Marlborough Antiques, were considered important exhibition spaces for young artists.

An avid supporter of Junkanoo, Malone produced a series of works featuring this national cultural expression and always considered it an art form in its own right.
