The
Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José
Miguel Insulza, has congratulated the Prime Minister-designate of
Jamaica, Portia Simpson Miller, on her electoral victory following
the General Elections of December 29, 2011, asserting that her
return to office “is confirmation of the confidence which the people
of Jamaica have in your leadership abilities.”
In a letter to
the Prime Minister-designate, the head of the OAS noted that
according to Jamaican election reports, the people of that Caribbean
country were able to exercise their right to vote freely and fairly
and a peaceful atmosphere prevailed. “This is a tribute to the
strongly held democratic traditions for which the Caribbean region
is well known and further proof that democracy continues to be
strengthened in Jamaica,” he wrote.
Finally, Secretary
General Insulza extended the full support of the hemispheric
Organization to Prime Minister Simpson Miller’s government, adding
that he wishes to “assure you that the Organization stands ready to
work with you and your administration in advancing the country’s
development needs.”
