Bahamian experiences Chile earthquake

Local businessman, Theo Tsavoussis was finishing a week's vacation in Chile and was only one day away from returning to his home in The Bahamas when the devastating 8.8 earthquake hit and since displaced 1.5 million people.

Tsavoussis gives an account of his experience during the earthquake, "I was fast asleep on the second floor of a friend's house when the bed began to shake. I sat up half asleep wondering what was going on. All of a sudden the the entire house started to shake violently. We were in the mountains and the sound was so loud and terrible, like thunder that wouldn't stop."

"It finally dawned on me that it was an earthquake. I jumped up and tried to walk, but it was impossible. The house was now swaying back and forth about a foot each second. Every time I tried to take a step my foot would land wrong...

Ricks, a member of the Challenged Athlete Foundation, who lost his right leg above the knee at age 17, will be cycling 100 miles in support of cancer care in the Bahamas in Saturday's 5th annual Ride for Hope in Eleuthera.

Dr Hepburn leaves his post as Chairman of the AMMC to serve his term at UNESCO

Nassau, Bahamas - Dr Davidson Hepburn, outgoing Chairman of the Antiquities, Monuments, and Museums Corporation (AMMC) has left to serve as President of the General Counsel of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, France.

Speaking on his last day at the Corporation on March 12, Dr Hepburn said, “I don’t like to consider myself the past Chairman of the AMMC because it was a wonderful experience here and I enjoyed every moment of it.”

As the chairman of the AMMC, he was keen for Bahamians to become knowledgeable about the history of the country. He also helped promote and plan the restoring of Old Nassau, which is part of the Downtown Revitalization Project...

Almost six thousand pre-register for National Prescription Drug Plan

NASSAU, The Bahamas -- Almost 6,000 Bahamians have pre-registered for Phase I of the National Prescription Drug Plan which is scheduled to be launched before Summer, 2010, Minister of Health, Dr the Hon Hubert A Minnis said Wednesday.

The pre-registration drive is being conducted by officials of the Ministry of Health, the Department of Public Health the National Insurance Board at health clinics and NIB offices on the islands New Providence, Grand Bahama, Exuma, Abaco, Eleuthera, Andros, Long Island, San Salvador, Bimini, Inagua and Mayaguana, Cat Island, Crooked Island and Acklins “for the convenience of Bahamians everywhere.”

Dr Minnis urged those persons who “fall in the eligible groups of persons” to continue to register for membership in The Plan “as soon as possible”...

Humane Society of GB hold successful spay/neuter clinic in High Rock

Freeport, Bahamas - The Humane Society of Grand Bahama in tandem with The Kohn Foundation and Pets Without Vets completed another successful spay/neuter clinic in High Rock last week.

With a small team of vets and licensed veterinary technicians from the U.S. and a very large geographic area to cover, 152 animals were sterilized at the field clinic held in the parish hall of St. Nicholas Anglican Church in four and a half days. 25 dogs and puppies, and 8 cats were surrendered to the HSGB during the clinic.

We found that most residents, while receptive and appreciative, had no way to bring their animals to the clinic site; several teams of HSGB staff and volunteers worked from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily picking up and returning animals to their homes. Dogs and cats were brought in from Gold Rock Creek, Freetown, Gambier Point, Bevans Town, High Rock, Pelican Point, Rocky Creek, and McLeans Town...

South Korea - Mr World sports challengers faced the Muju Mountain climb in treacherous conditions. They set off early in the gondola which took them 1522m above sea level. When they got to the top of the mountain in the cable car they faced a steep climb to the peak with icy rocks and rugged terrain to navigate. The teams showed fantastic work rate to reach the top and even more to get down the slippery slopes. The hungry contestants came back for lunch before heading out again for the second stage of the Sports with the Paintball and ATV challenge.

Talent Finals took place today at Gyeongju and Kendrick performed traditional dance, whereupon the Mr. World Facebook page said, " Bahamas steps on stage performing a high energy, high tempo dance routine, and the crowd is really enjoying this.. ."

Rising British Director Scoops £14,000 in 14 Islands Film Challenge

London, England - The search for the UK’s most talented film director in Britain came to an end last night as 32 year old Robin Schmidt was announced as the most talented filmmaker in the country, winning £14,000 to launch his career.

Held at The Princess Anne Theatre, BAFTA in London, The 14 Islands Film Challenge Awards presented four awards to the hottest filmmakers in the UK. Oscar-nominated producer Finola Dwyer and chair judge and BBC director Bharat Nalluri awarded prizes on the night, including the Armchair Critics award, voted by the public to Kevin Curtis.

As well as taking the first prize of £14,000 Robin Schmidt also becomes the Canon Ambassador for 2010, he will be trained to be a professional video representative and brand envoy for the leading camera manufacturer. Second place went to 28 year old Nimer Rashed. Obtaining a Bahamas citizenship is not as easy as you might think. Even if you were born in the Bahamas, it does not mean that you are entitled to citizenship. There are many strict rules and regulations in the Constitution of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, dated July 10, 1973, with regard to a Bahamian citizenship.

It is possible to acquire a Bahamian citizenship if you have resided in the Bahamas for an extended period of time (approximately 6 to 9 years) and have lived there for a minimum of 12 consecutive months.

Your chances of obtaining citizenship are even greater if you plan to remain in the country permanently and know the Bahamian language and customs. You must also be a law-abiding resident and an individual of ‘good’ character...

Western Air to Begin Direct Service to Jamaica

San Andros, Andros – Western Air, the largest privately owned airline in The Bahamas will begin direct flights to two cities in Jamaica in April 2010. The airline has been granted schedule and charter licenses by the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation to operate daily flights to Kingston and Montego Bay from Nassau. Western Air has also been approved by the Jamaican Civil Aviation Authority for these routes.

The Nassau to Kingston flights are scheduled to commence on Monday, April 12^th, 2010. The Montego Bay route is right behind with an April 30^th start date.Initially, Western Air will fly between Nassau and Kingston daily except Saturdays, and between Nassau and Montego Bay twice weekly on Fridays and Sundays.

Haiti Relief Drive Container On the Way

Orlando, Florida - 14 year-old Leah Rodgers made The Bahamas proud by capturing a first place title in one of her five events at an international gymnastics meet over the weekend. Rodgers, who is a member of Nassau ‘Nastics, was the only Bahamian and Caribbean competitor at the 2010 Leprechaun Classics in Florida. This was her first ever competition.

The young athlete wowed the judges and blew away her competition by getting top marks with super splits and fantastic flips in her floor routine. Rodgers returned to the competition ring and earned a medal on the bars and on the vault. Despite slipping off of the balance beam during her display, Rodgers jumped back into competition to continue her routine.

Norwegian Cruise Line plans major overhaul of Bahamas private island, Great Stirrup Cay

MIAMI, FL -- It's makeover time for Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line's private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Kevin Sheehan announced today at the annual Cruise Shipping Miami convention that the line would spend $20 million on the 250-acre island's first top-to-bottom overhaul in more than two decades.

"This is very, very significant investment for our company," Sheehan said, noting the hefty cost of the project. But "this was critical to us to improve the customer experience."

Located 120 miles east of Ft. Lauderdale, the island getaway will be getting a new marina...

GBPA Customer Relations Department Marks Official Opening

Freeport, Bahamas – The fifteen-member Customer Relations Department at the Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) officially welcomed the public to their newly renovated premises on Monday morning. By noon, more than 100 customers were serviced at the upgraded facilities on the ground floor of the GBPA headquarters building.

“We are more than pleased to be able to service our customers in these expanded facilities. We have worked feverishly to convert this area into premises that would comfortably accommodate our customers,” said GBPA Customer Relations Department Manager, Nicole Colebrooke.

Garden of the Groves "Art inspired by Nature" Workshop - Public Show on Sunday

Freeport, Grand Bahama - Over the past five Saturdays art students were inspired by the beautiful scenery at Garden of the Groves while their instructor, Angelika Siska, lectured and advised them how to use their paint brushes with acrylics on canvas to create their own master pieces in nature.

Angelika is a long-time resident of Grand Bahama and a well known artist in Germany and the United States where she has exhibited in art shows. Titles of her recent exhibitions in Germany and Kentucky have been "Butterflies, Blossoms and Landscapes" and local art students are very fortunate to be given the opportunity to share in Angelika's expertise. For many of us being evaluated began in grade school, where we were evaluated, tested on the knowledge of various subject matters. Evaluations are everywhere. Do we recognize our visit to our general physicians for an annual “check up” as an evaluation? Indeed such an experience is includes an evaluation of the current and change in our weight, height and vital signs. As defined by www.dictionary.com , the word “evaluate” means to examine and judge carefully; appraise.

In the workplace evaluations are accomplished through the use of job appraisals. For many this is an annual act, conducted by the team leader or manager with and in very rare occasions without the Associates input. The evaluated criteria vary depending on the nature of the workplace, its’ products and services, for instance in the healthcare industry the demonstrated level of patient care may be evaluated...

Youths invited to enter Commonwealth Competitions

Nassau, Bahamas -- The Royal Commonwealth Society has launched the 2010 Young Commonwealth Competitions under the theme “Science, Technology and Society.” The competition is open to anyone living in a Commonwealth country under the age of 30.

Over 60,000 young persons enter the competitions, which are held under a different theme each year. The objectives of the competitions include the opportunity to nurture the creative talent of young people, encourage the youth to respond to current international events, enable young people to share their thoughts with peers around the world and promote the use of the English Language.

GB Red Cross in need of food donations

The Freeport News - Nearly a month ago, Administrator of the Grand Bahama Centre of The Bahamas Red Cross Society Mary Russell, indicated to The Freeport News that their monthly food parcels would not be issued in February and would probably not be distributed until the end of March.

Now, she regrets to inform the community that the parcels will not be issued yet again.

"No food has come in, so no parcels will be issued this month," Russell said, adding that until and unless food donations increase, the monthly parcel distribution cannot continue.

Based on the incoming donations, Russell said, she is uncertain about when the parcels will be issued again...

Google has an answer to the pesky economy and to getting over its tiff with Apple. The company says it will begin purchasing one small company a month.

"Acquisitions are turned on again at Google and we are doing our normal maneuvers, which is small companies," Eric Schmidt told Reuters. "My estimate would be one-a-month acquisitions and these are largely in lieu of hiring. There may be larger acquisitions, but they really are unpredictable."

The Silicon Valley search company has a long history of buying smaller companies but Schmidt froze Google's wallet earlier this year because he said the market was too expensive.

The company said the move is a sign that the worst of the economic woes the tech industry has been dealing with is behind them...
