Freeport, Bahamas -
Campers attending Coach
Nathan O'Connor's Tennis Camp were treated to a presentation by EARTHCARE
on Becoming a Good Environmental Steward. The EARTHCARE representative
spoke about Earth Day, International Coastal Cleanup Day, the Industrial
area of Grand Bahama Island, water pollution, habitat destruction, motor
oil recycling, air pollution, climate change, and pollution of the ground.
The children participated fully in the discussions and were very interested
in the materials presented. At the end of the presentation a round
of trivia questions showed how much the children had absorbed.
The Grand Prize winner
of the EARTHCARE Trivia contest was Robert Wright age 12 from Nassau
and Cat Island. The Second place winner, Leopold Wright age 11
½, Robert's brother and Third place winner, Maya Sweeting age 7 also
received prizes.
Gail Woon, EARTHCARE
Founder was very happy to be called back to work with the students again
this summer. “Our first time with Coach Nathan's Tennis Campers
was in 2010. Normally all of the EARTHCARE work stops during the
summer because all of the schools are closed. Coach Nathan invited
us here to work with his campers again in 2011, so we were glad to be
able to reach some more young minds. We covered a lot of material
in a small amount of time. We tackled the topics of
air, water, and ground pollution. We also covered the significance
of Earth Day and the students were encouraged to participate in International
Coastal Cleanup Day this September. The campers also learned about simple
things that they can do in their everyday lives to make a difference
such as: Conserve water; Use cars less; Walk or ride your bike;
Recycle; Compost; Change lightbulbs to CFL; Make your home more energy
efficient; Make sure parents maintain their cars; Turn off lights and
unplug appliances when not in use; Use solar; Use green shopping bags;
Donate used clothing; Buy used items; Be active in your community; Be
a good example for your peers. It was a great time and we hope
that Coach Nathan will invite EARTHCARE back next summer!”
Coach Nathan's Tennis
Camp began on June 25th and wraps up with a grand beach day 26th August, 2011. The campers learn about tennis,
golf, nutrition, exercise, responsibility and the environment.
The activities other than tennis include a day at the beach, excursions
to the library and games. Coach Nathan's Tennis Camp will begin
again after school closes in June 2012. Sign up early.
