'Rebuilding Our Sailing Culture, It’s A Legacy’ Freeport, Bahamas - The chairman of the Grand Bahama Regatta & Homecoming Committee Chervita Campbell wants you to catch Regatta fever! The event team is working hard to delivery another great sport and cultural experience. Funding and public relation are critical components to the success of the event. Along with media partner, TheBahamasWeekly.com, the GBRH committee are pleased to have engaged new partners this year, both Kalik and BTC. "We are thankful to our continued and new sponsors without them our dreams would not be a reality," said Campbell. This year's honoree is Canard Bethel, a native of Andros, a boat builder, and former educator. "This year's Sailing we hope to attract a wide number Class Sailing Sloops and are working on getting B and C Class Sloops, provided funding is able to accommodate. Jr. Sailing will come from the Grand Bahama Sailing Club," said Campbell. This year on-shore patrons can expect: Friday: A Regatta Beerfest, Skipper’s Party, and entertainment by Bodine and Julien Believe hosted by DJ Solex along with DJ’s. Saturday: A kiddy corner, steel pan performance, treasure hunt, Grand Ma House, watermelon eating contest, Bahamian treasure hunt, onion peeling contest, fire dancing, hop scotch. These activities run from 12 noon to 6 pm. Then from 6 pm and after will be performances by Wendi, Avy, Dyson Knight, Demac, hosted by Tekio T and Mighty Pencil. The regatta committee’s main objective is to keep the legacy of sloop sailing alive for generations to come. "We must preserve this rich legacy of sloop sailing and find innovative ways to keep our youth engaged in this sport and bring more women to the forefront of sailing," Campbell said. "For far too long women have sat on the sidelines and watched the races, but there are handful of young women who are loving the sport and giving their male counterparts a run for their money."
