Feminine, demure and oh so sexy, lace is designers’ current fabric of choice. This age old textile has stood the test of time, remaining as relevant in today’s fashion scene as it was in centuries past. Designer labels from Givenchy to Alexander McQueen have all incorporated lace in their upcoming Cruise 2011 collections, making it a hot trend for not only this fall but into next year as well.

However if you’ve never slipped on a lace piece, the thought of wearing a fabric so inherently boudoir may seem daunting.

Never fear, lace is a classic look and when done right you can be assured you won’t look like a walking doily.

When wearing lace stick to the rule “less is more.” One lace piece is sufficient, combining different lace pieces with varying patterns is overkill. Classic lace pieces come in every style imaginable from simple dresses, to blouses, skirts and even leggings.

If the thought of slipping on a peek-a-boo lace top makes you break out in a nervous sweat try a lined lace skirt instead. A lined lace skirt allows you the feminine flirtiness of wearing lace in a more full coverage piece. Many lace skirts combine the contrast of black lace with a nude colored lining or vice versa, making it easy to pair with many solid colored tops in your wardrobe.

For the busy fashionista, lace is a great option for its practicality, easily taking you from day to night. A great lace look can take you from the boardroom to a dinner meeting and right into cocktail hour.

For your TGIF celebrations this week, slip on a lace camisole beneath your suit, allowing just a peek to be revealed under your blazer and shed your blazer for after hour drinks.

Aside from choosing the perfect style, lace comes in a variety of colors as well. Black lace is by far the sexiest and most common hue choice for your lace ensemble, but avoid going overboard with the black lace for fear of looking like you just left a funeral.

For a less overtly sexy look, opt for pastel colored lace. Take an adorable frothy colored lace baby doll dress and pair with sandals for the duration of summer. Though our climate changes only slightly for fall, make your lace baby doll dress fall ready with opaque tights and oxfords for a prim and proper look.

If prim and proper is not your cup of tea, take a little of the sweet out of your lace look by pairing it with less feminine pieces. A menswear inspired blazer or lightweight tailored leather skirt are great accompaniments to a lace top. Pairing pieces from opposite ends of the fashion spectrum, feminine and masculine is almost always complimentary.

Once you’ve found those perfect quality lace pieces to add to your wardrobe making sure they last is the key. Caring for lace pieces is also very important to ensure your clothing stands the test of time. Lace is designed with so hand washing all your lace pieces is a must. Tossing your lace pieces into the washer will wear them down very quickly.
