With the approval of all the documents submitted for voting by the member states, the 48th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) held on June 4 and 5 in Washington D.C. concluded today.

During the last plenary session of the meeting, a Declaration of Support to the People of Nicaragua and a Resolution on the Situation in Venezuela were approved. Elections were held in which Humberto Sierra Porto (Colombia) and Eduardo Ferrer Mac-Gregor (Mexico) were re-elected and Ricardo Pérez Manrique (Uruguay) was elected as judges of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights...

El Salvador today became the sixth country to deposit the instrument of ratification of the Inter-American Convention on the Protection of the Human Rights of Older Persons at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC.

In a joint effort between representatives of international organizations to respond to violence against women, the panel "Regional and International Mechanisms for the Comprehensive Approach to Violence against Women and Girls" was organized by the CIM as Technical Secretariat of the Follow-up Mechanism to the Belém do Pará  Convention (MESECVI). The event was held at the OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, as part of the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25th).

Democratic Governance against Corruption to be theme of Peru Summit of the Americas in 2018 - Jun 21, 2017 - 12:53:43 AM

The Eighth Summit of the Americas, which will be held in Lima, Peru, in April 2018, will have Democratic Governance against Corruption as its core theme, announced the Peruvian foreign minister, Ricardo Luna, at the forty-seventh regular session of the OAS General Assembly currently under way in Cancún, Mexico.

Luna made the announcement at the first ministerial meeting of the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG). The minister said that the preparations for the coming summit were an opportunity “to reflect on democratic governance and how it is impacted by corruption,” as well as “to evaluate concrete measures to combat impunity through regional cooperation...”

The three-day meeting will bring together the leaders from all 34 member governments in the Americas to discuss matters affecting the region.

The Hon. Darren Henfield, Minister of Foreign Affairs, returned to Nassau from an official visit to Washington, D.C., 30th May - 1st June 2017, where he participated in the Twenty-ninth Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs on the Situation in Venezuela.

On arrival in Washington DC, 30 May, Minister Henfield met with diplomatic staff of the Embassy/Permanent Mission to the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Consular Annex, where he was briefed on the work of the respective offices and the portfolios of each officer.

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS/EOM) to The Bahamas congratulated the people of the Caribbean country on their continued commitment to democracy and on their determination to exercise their constitutional right to vote, as reflected in the high turnout rate in the General Elections of Wednesday, May 10. The Mission, led by OAS Ombudsman Ms. Sherry Tross, also extended congratulations to the new Government.

On Election Day, the EOM, comprised 11 observers of 8 nationalities, was present in 29 constituencies and visited 157 polling stations. The Mission´s preliminary report highlighted the steps taken to ensure that citizens living abroad could have the opportunity to exercise their franchise. This is unique in the region...

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS/EOM) to The Bahamas, led by its Chief of Mission Sherry Tross, began its deployment today ahead of the May 10 general elections.

Tross, who is also the Ombudsperson of the Organization, arrived today in Nassau and will lead a team comprised of 11 experts from Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, St Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, United States and Venezuela. This afternoon, the Chief of Mission and Parliamentary Commissioner Sherlyn Hall signed the Electoral Procedures Agreement that establishes the conditions for the work of the Mission in The Bahamas...

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Organization of American States (OAS) will deploy an Electoral Observation Mission to the general elections in The Bahamas on May 10, 2017, according to the agreement signed on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 between OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro and the Interim Representative of The Bahamas to the OAS, Mr. Chet Neymour, Deputy Chief of Mission at The Bahamas Embassy.

The Mission will be headed by the Ombudsperson of the Organization, Sherry Tross, and began its deployment on Wednesday...

OAS Executive Secretariat With Recent Appointment - Apr 25, 2017 - 12:28:15 AM

The Organization of American States (OAS) has fulfilled the wishes of OAS Member States to strengthen the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) Executive Secretariat by appointing Ambassador Adam Namm to the post of Executive Secretary of CICAD.

The appointment was made in December 2016. Ambassador Namm enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career at the U.S. State Department. CICAD was without an Executive Secretary for more than 18 months following the departure of Ambassador Paul Simons in May 2015.

His Excellency Nestor Mendez, Assistant Secretary-General of the OAS, said the appointment is already paying dividends.
