Pilot Club of Lucaya Navigators' Ball this Saturday -

Fifteen (15) professional women of the Grand Bahama community have given
unselfishly to the leadership of the Pilot Club of Lucaya and as we
approach the 21st century, the mission and vision of these phenomenal
women transcends from individual to individual. Caring, compassionate
and strong are the words which describe these amazing women.
On
Saturday, April 30th 2016, 13 Past Presidents will be honoured along
with six Charter Members who served as President in the Freeport Club.

Bahamas National Trust Honours Shelby White at AGM -

Nassau, Bahamas - At the Bahamas National Trust’s recent Annual General Meeting, Prime
Minister Perry Christie praised longtime Eleuthera homeowner and
frequent visitor, Shelby White for her role in creating a world-class
native plant conservation and education centre at Governor’s Harbour.
The
prime minister also acknowledged the“extraordinary importance”of the
BNT's work to the preservation of the country and he suggested that the
great work the BNT is doing might persuade him to consider a further
increase in the annual government subvention in the upcoming budget...

Nassau grouper is one of the most important fishery species in The
Bahamas and wider Caribbean, but due to heavy over-exploitation its
survival is under threat everywhere.
Grouper is the highest-priced and most popular food fish in the Bahamas.
The market price alone shows that grouper is now a luxury item due to
increasing scarcity...

Top US National Park Service officer Visits Andros -

A top specialist from the Office of International Affairs of the US
National Park Service recently toured protected areas and other sites on
Andros as a guest of the Bahamas National Trust during a personal visit
with his family. Jonathan Putnam is the World Heritage Programme
Officer and Western Hemisphere specialist for the Park Service. He works
to build networks of national parks to help protect migratory species,
and to further conserve natural and cultural heritage.
“We stand to gain
by engaging with international colleagues on the issues of large land
(and sea) scapes and connectivity conservation,” Putnam said during a

Super Heroes honoured at the18th Annual Atlantic Medical Fun Run Walk this weekend! -

Over 1400 participants (runners & walkers) registered for the 18th
Annual Atlantic Medical Fun Run Walk this weekend.(Sat April 16th, 6:30
a.m). Participants turned out in large numbers to support the annual
event which brought together people from all walks of life. The event
highlighted "superheroes" (survivors) of both cancer and diabetes.

BNT Navigators from Andros Win Agro Expo Prize -

Two students from the Central Andros High Navigators Club placed second
in the student exhibit competition at the recent Agribusiness Expo
organized by the Ministry of Agriculture & Marine Resources.
Livingston
Toussaint and Rome Newbold's exhibit focused on the importance of
mangroves as nurseries for commercial fish. They painted murals and
developed storyboards on the four species of mangrove that grow here.

The Bahamas National Trust has extended its Navigator's program to
Anatol Rodgers Secondary School. The three-year program testers a sense
of environmental stewardship and prepares students For careers in marine
biology.
"Navigators helps young people to be able to connect
the dots when it comes to career paths associated with the environment,"

Top Migratory Bird Expert Featured at Bahamas Natural History Conference -

Dr Peter Marra, one of the world’s top experts on migratory birds, will
be a featured speaker at the upcoming Bahamas Natural History
Conference, organised by The Bahamas National Trust. Marra heads the
Smithsonian Migratory Bird Centre in Washington DC and has authored over
180 peer-reviewed papers published by leading scientific journals.
His primary interest is in understanding the factors that control bird
populations. He is also pursuing technological solutions to track
animals (from dragonflies to bats) throughout their lifetimes. The
conference takes place March 15-17
at the College of The Bahamas in Oakes Field...

the next 25 years in partnership with agencies such as the
Inter-American Development Bank, The College of The Bahamas and The
Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation. Extensive
research, analysis and public consultation is needed for the success of
this plan. Therefore, Bahamian libraries must do their part to inform

Fraternity Men Restore BNT Trails at the Rand -

together recently to restore trails at the Rand Nature Centre, regional

Grand Bahama tea party fundraiser draws support for local cancer patients -

Freeport, The Bahamas - More than 200 supporters
donned their finest Sunday attire for the Cancer Association of Grand
Bahama's first "Happy Tea Garden Party" fundraiser in Princess Isle on
February 21. The elegant affair was held in aid of local cancer
patients.
President of the Cancer Association of Grand Bahama Norma Headley said
the organisation was pleased with the turnout, adding that she
anticipated just over 100 guests.

Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve Expedition to Inagua -

Dr Ethan Freid, botanist at the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve on
Eleuthera, recently led a collecting expedition to Inagua as part of the
Preserve’s plant conservation efforts.
Located in Governor’s
Harbour, Eleuthera, the 25-acre Preserve is operated by the Bahamas
National Trust and funded by the Leon Levy Foundation. It features
nature trails and provides information on food and medicinal plants, and
the hardwood trees that played a role in the history of the island. It
is also a facility for the propagation of indigenous plants and trees...
