Freeport, Grand Bahama - More and more businesses are supporting causes they care about by establishing their own charitable funds.

On Friday evening, Caribbean Pavement Solutions demonstrated an incredible act of amazing corporate charitable giving by donating $18,000.00 to the charities of its first annual The Dollar That Could Project in its cheque presentation cocktail reception.

In August 2015, CPS launched its four month campaign which sought to raise funds through a dollar drive campaign for in aid of The Grand Bahama Humane Society, Rotary Grand Bahama, and The Grand Bahama Children's Home...

New Providence - The Bahamas - The fifty-second Annual Heart Ball was held this past weekend at the Melia Nassau Beach Resort.  A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award, which was presented to Mrs. Elma Garraway.

Chairman of the Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation, Mr. R.E. Barnes presented the Golden Heart Award to Mrs. Garraway.  Mr. Barnes noted that the Golden Heart Award is given to someone who has given of themselves to help their fellow man. The nominations for the award are made by the public to recognize the role and the contributions that the winner has made in serving the public...

The Grand Bahama Regional Branch of the Bahamas National Trust will hold its annual general meeting at the Rand Nature Centre in Freeport on March 8 beginning at 6.30pm.

Dr. Jacqueline Miller of the Florida Museum of Natural History will give a public lecture on Bahamian butterflies and moths after the business meeting, and a cocktail reception will follow the public lecture.

Dr. Miller is an adjunct professor at the University of Florida and a noted expert in Lepidoptera - an order of insects that includes 180,000 species of moths and butterflies...

The third Bahamas Natural History Conference - organised by The Bahamas National Trust every two years - will take place March 14-18 at the College of The Bahamas in Oakes Field.

Top sponsors for the event - which is open to the public - are the College, the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, and the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, a Florida-based fisheries conservation group which has contributed $10,000 to help underwrite the event.

The theme for this year’s event is Reversing the Decline...

Heart Ball Grand Prize Winner, Going to London - Feb 18, 2016 - 2:02:37 PM

Patrice Ritchie, second from left, was the grand prize raffle winner at the 52nd Annual Heart Ball and she and a companion will be traveling round-trip to London, thanks to British Airways. Over 200 prizes were awarded at the Ball but the highlight of the evening was the grand prize, an impressive package that included VAT consultation from Seaview Management Services, an original Anthony ‘Big Mo’ Morley painting, Thomas Sabo Watch from Coin of The Realm and two round-trip tickets to London with British Airways.

“Our night was a huge success and proceeds will certainly assist our 10 children presently awaiting surgery,” said Mrs. Coretta Owen, Co-chair of the Heart Ball Committee.

Over 200 schoolchildren took part in environmental presentations at The Bahamas National Trust on New Providence during January. And more than 12,000 students and teachers visited BNT parks and facilities around the country last year.

“At a time when more and more children are disconnected from nature our presentations connect students to our national parks and complement science and social studies curricula by acting as outdoor classrooms,” said BNT Education Director Portia Sweeting.

Nassau, Bahamas - Executives from The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employer’s Confederation (BCCEC) met with officials of the Ministry of Finance on Friday, January 28th to discuss the new requirements for business licence.

The BCCEC was concerned that the new requirements placed an unnecessary financial and administrative burden on small and micro businesses (i.e. businesses with a turnover of less than $400,000) and the new timelines for certification of turnover by January 31st was too tight and unreasonable for full compliance...

Several businesses are undergoing upgrades, such as Bahama Rock, which has commenced a $9.3 million phased expansion, and other businesses, such as Caribbean Bottling, Bahamian Brewery and Island Bedding, all small and medium-sized businesses are following suit.   

Some infrastructural work is underway such as the state of the art fire station, as well as the storage facility at the C.A. Smith Complex, which are both on schedule and within budget...

The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) is showcasing selected national parks in observance of World Wetlands Day on February 2.

"The date marks the 1971 adoption of the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty that helps protect wetlands,” said BNT Education Director Portia Sweeting. "The Bahamas signed on to the treaty in 1997, with the BEST Commission and the BNT as administrative agencies."

Freeport, Bahamas – Although the holidays may be over, the memories of Festival Noel are still lingering for Agave, who captured the Chef Noel title for a third time - two times back-to-back!

Seven restaurants competed in the 2015 Chef Noel culinary competition, which is a record entrance for the event. Despite the bad weather on the night, the turnout was excellent, garnering the event one of its best financial results too.
