Haitian Artist, Edouard Duval Carrie - National Art Gallery's first Artist Talk of 2008 - Mar 1, 2008 - 9:12:38 AM

edouardCopy.jpg
The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is pleased to present an artist talk by world-renowned Haitian painter and sculptor Edouard Duval Carrie on Thursday, March 6th at 7pm.

Duval-Carrie was born in Haiti in 1954. Though his family was forced to leave Haiti more than twenty-five years ago, as the writer Matt Schudel puts it, Haiti never left him. His art exhibits a dynamic blend of Afro-Caribbean culture, fantasy, and spectacular ornamentation. Duval-Carrie’s works, much like his consistently changing surroundings, are a dynamic and colorful expression of a diverse past, that weaves together African fables, classic mythology, Haitian and world history with contemporary events. These themes reverberate at the heart of all of his work...

Vincent Yelverton D’Aguilar - Feb 20, 2008 - 7:35:44 PM
VincentNAGBcopy.jpg
There are several individuals whose dream it was to see the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas established and thriving. Members of this group have been pillars of strength, fountains of resources, saintly in their kindness towards, and support of the Gallery - before the first new stone was laid - until now. These are people the Gallery could not have embarked on its journey without. Vincent D’Aguilar was the leader of this group. He was a marvelous man: practical, gracious, funny, encouraging and extremely generous with his time and collection. In this moment, I cannot put my thoughts around the fact that he is no longer here...

PB180019_copy.jpg
If you have traveled through the intersection of West and West Hill Streets in recent weeks, you would have seen a very colorful mural in a graffiti style adorning the external walls of the NAGB. At first one might be taken aback by the spectacle and think that someone might have tagged the gallery in the dark of night. However, on closer examination one notices the initials of the gallery boldly represented, eyes looking out at you and a variety of shapes and forms brightly drawn across the surface and realize that something different is happening here...
