Anglers across Florida converged in the settlement of West End, Grand Bahama on November 21 for the highly anticipated 3rd Annual Old Bahama Bay Wahoo Charity Cup. For participants, the event was a thrilling opportunity to sail the beautiful, boundless blue waters of Grand Bahama Island in hunt for wahoo large enough to earn them the competition’s top prize and, of course, bragging rights.

The Cruise and Maritime Department of The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation (BMOTA) has introduced an initiative designed to increase spend from cruise ship staff and crew.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation delegates lead by Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar, as well as numerous industry partners took media outlets and tour operators in Canada on a whirlwind tour of the Islands of the Bahamas, solidifying the messaging of the Bahamas being a viable destination for the Canadian tourists, despite the impact of Hurricane Dorian.

“Following Hurricane Dorian, we felt that it was absolutely critical to come and let the Canadian market know that we are open for business and to introduce The Bahamas to new aspects of the Canadian market,” remarked Bahamas Ministry of Tourism Director General, Joy Jibrilu, “as far west as Vancouver, there is huge potential to market the country...”

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Dionisio D'Aguliar continues to push the messaging that the Bahamas is indeed open for business.

The pirates of Blackbeard’s Revenge stole the show at the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association’s (FCCA) 26th annual conference held in San Juan, Puerto Rico recently.

A study, undertaken by ForwardKeys, the travel analytics firm, has revealed that despite the recent ravages of hurricane Dorian and other huge storms in the Caribbean, tourism will continue to grow. The results of the study were presented at a Caribbean Tourism Organization-organised news conference at World Travel Market this morning.

Forward bookings for the important winter season, 1st November to 31st January are currently 1.6% ahead of where they were at the equivalent point last year.

Dionisio D’Aguilar, recently attended the 60th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) which made a big splash in support of The Bahamas, and which proved to be an amazing opportunity for the Minister and The Islands Of The Bahamas. 

In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, a number of yachters have jumped on board with relief efforts by employing eight private yachts to provide aid to Abaco and Grand Bahama.

The inaugural White Sands Bahamas NCAA Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston and featuring some of the top collegiate golf teams in the United States, took place over  a six day period at Atlantis’ seaside championship Ocean Club Golf  Course on Paradise Island. The first-of-its-kind tournament fielded a total of 28 teams: 14 women’s teams competing firs,t from Oct. 28-30, followed by 14 men’s teams playing Nov. 1-3.

Grand Bahama Island has already rebounded from Hurricane Dorian with a handful of reopenings this month.  Many of its hotels and attractions have reopened or plan to do so shortly, while cruise ships have resumed calling to the island and the airport plans to resume international service this month.
