Please Don’t Feed The Iguanas - Jan 9, 2014 - 10:50:19 AM
Nassau, Bahamas - Feeding wildlife is an
increasingly common tourist activity here in our islands, especially the
Family Islands. But a new study published online by the journal
Conservation Physiology by Dr. Charles Knapp, PhD, of the John G. Shedd
Aquarium in Chicago, and a team of researchers shows that endangered
iguanas are suffering further physiological problems as a result of
being fed by tourists and locals.
The two year study compared
rock iguanas living on tourist-visited islands and those living on
non-tourist-visited islands and the physiological differences and
infection rates. Blood and fecal samples were collected from both male
and female iguanas during two research trips in 2010 and 2012...

BNT Amendment Bill 2010 Remarks - Environment Minister Earl Deveaux - Oct 6, 2010 - 2:03:52 PM
Nassau, Bahamas - The following is a contribution by the Hon Earl D. Deveaux, MP and Minister of The Environment on the Bill for an Act to Amend The Bahamas National Trust Act, 2010 in the House of Assembly:
One
of the many unwritten, little known vignettes about the creation of
The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, the oldest and most famous in The
Bahamas National Park system, is that The Park was created to forestall
much, if not the whole, of the Exuma Cays from being alienated to development
anticipated by a now deceased wealthy American industrialist who wished
to purchase the whole of the Exuma Cays and develop luxury homes for
the wealthy of the world. Since six cays had already been sold, he was
told it was against the law; and the legislature quickly made it so...

Tomorrow’s Leaders Witnessing the Natural Jewels on the West Side of Andros - Jul 1, 2010 - 5:54:51 PM
Andros Island, The Bahamas - The West Side National Park located on the northwest side of Andros Island has been in existence since 2002. However, several Androsians and Bahamians that have been using the west side for years were, and in some cases are still not aware of the park’s existence nor its boundaries. In the past, this park like a few other parks in the Bahamas was not recognized for its unique natural features and has not been actively managed because of limited capacity to do so.
Since 2006, The Nature Conservancy (the Conservancy) has been working collectively with The Bahamas National Trust (BNT), Andros Conservancy and Trust (ANCAT), Nature’s Hope for South Andros, The Department of Marine Resources and The Kerzner Marine Foundation to promote both the existing and, the expansion of the West Side National Park while encouraging sustainable use of the area. The west side consists of vast areas of tidal flats with many small islands and estuaries that provide nursery and feeding areas for commercially valuable species like, snapper...
