Turks and Caicos Islands - In an effort to raise public awareness about the risks with drinking, and alcohol’s effects on general health, the Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence is observing the month of November as Alcohol Awareness Month.

Activities planned for the month are:

Daily public service announcements (Radio and Television)

Community outreach – distribution of pamphlets School visits On Friday 18th the department will host its first annual Health Forum where TCI’s leading medical and psychology professionals will update the public on how alcohol affects your health
Also on Friday 18th at 6:30 pm at Sam’s Parking Lot, Downtown, there will be a candle light ceremony for persons who are or have been affected by drugs; their families and friends On Friday 25th, judging of the National Primary Poster – Art Competition.

The Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence is concerned that alcohol consumption is considered acceptable behavior. This attitude of acceptance means not enough attention is paid to the risks, particularly to the developing bodies of our young people. Alcohol dehydrates the skin, accelerates the aging process, affects your eyes and hair and makes you boated.

Alcohol consumption also has consequences for society:

1. Most serious accidents on TCIs streets, some of which have been deadly, are caused by drinking before or during driving
2. It is a major contributor to broken families, and children being neglected and abused.

Help the Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence build a healthy nation.
