Nassau, Bahamas -
On
May 11th, the runway at the
Sheraton Cable Beach Resort
in Nassau was alive
with the latest styles of Bahamian designers as well as those
visiting from island nations
around the globe for Islands of the World Fashion Showcase now being
held in May and November annually.
After an extremely successful night of the fashion, the awards presentations were made the following night at a closing reception with a V.I.P dinner at Blu Restaurant.
Taking the
Jackson Burnside III Fashion & Design Award was the collaborative team of Elizabeth Clarke and Reuno Pratt.
Four designers participated from The Bahamas participated in the competition, which is a tribute to the late Caribbean
architectural icon from The Bahamas, Jackson Burnside III.
The
designed garments were to echo the Jackson L.
Burnside's style of architecture and design.
The
Sustainable Eco-Fashion Award went to Harl Taylor BAG represented by Mrs. Beverly Taylor of The Bahamas. "Harl would be very proud to see this award, and see that the line is continuing on strong!" said Mrs. Taylor upon receiving the award.
The
Culture & Fashion Award went to David Rolle of The Bahamas. Rolle won the NextGen Award in 2010. His line this year was themed around capital punishment. "Islands of the World continues to have its voice heard in the rhythm of
world fashion. I am humbled by the devoted team for selecting me in this year's production. As a proud Bahamian, winning
the cultural fashion award gives me great honour. Considering this year's
entries and past winners, this award speaks to the talent of the island
artist. I can't wait to enter again in November 2012," said Rolle.
The
NextGen Designer Award went to Courtney McIntosh, an up and coming designer from Grand Bahama Island who said the inspiration for her line was 'Bohemian glamour'. She experimented with prints, solids and unique lycra fabrics. "Winning the NextGen award is such an honour, and just being in the
arena with such wonderful designers from all over the Caribbean was an amazing experience!" said McIntosh. "The entire show was a wonderful showcase of designers and to be
bestowed the award, not only pushes me to do better and strive for
success, but it makes me more determined than ever to represent The Bahamas on the
world stage."
Well pleased after a successful event, founder of Islands of the World Fashion Showcase, Owen Bethel has this to say, "The designers who presented at this edition reflected an eclectic
style, daring to be bold with mixes of prints, thereby highlighting the
cross-cultural diversity in the designs. This reinforces one of the
important themes of the event, i.e. cultural diversity. The creativity
and thinking outside of the box, most vividly displayed by the
participants in the Jackson Burnside III Fashion & Design Award,
signify the interest that has developed in a new generation of designers
within the region. They are gearing for international exposure and
marketing. With the launch of the magazine and online boutique during
this May edition we have taken another major step to achieving that
international exposure for the designers."
Stay tuned for more coverage from the event in the days to come as we feature specific designers who presented at IWFS and
see you at Islands of the World Fashion Showcase in NOVEMBER, 2012!
