Nassau, Bahamas - "It was a gloomy Saturday afternoon in September..." when members from the Rotaract Club of East Nassau held its first book reading at the Nassau Public Library on Shirley and Parliament Streets. The initiative, inspired by President Taran Mackey and Community Service Director Raschard McKinney, was held on September 7 in light of International Literacy Day on September 8.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, known as UNESCO, has been celebrating International Literacy Day for over 40 years. This day is highlighted to remind the world of the significance of literacy as more than just a hobby or scholastic exercise, but a basic human right and a means for personal empowerment.
On Saturday, September 7, 2013 the club began the literacy exercise by installing a new sign for the library, indicating the adoption of the library by the club. The Rotaract Club of East Nassau intends to assist the library by doing several repairs to windows and hurricane shutters within the month. The event progressed with members reading several books to children in the Bain and Grants Town area, arranged by the Urban Renewal Center for the district. Numerous stories were read to the kids, primarily the Topsy and Tim series, which is being used in the Ministry of Education reading curriculum. The kids answered questions at the end of each reading and won books as prizes. Additionally, some of the kids read stories to the members of the club and their peers; showing their strength in literacy.
