The Free National Movement issued the following statement regarding the PLP’s growing efforts to score political points during a global pandemic:

“Sadly, even as the rest of the country comes together to fight the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, the PLP leaders see this crisis as a time to score political points. Quick to publicly criticize at the outset of the crisis, Brave Davis and his top deputy have returned from the shadows to launch coordinated political attacks under the guise of leadership.

“As is typical of Brave Davis, he is throwing around unwarranted criticism with no solutions even as the FNM Government works with civic and business leaders to control the spread of the deadly virus. To question that progress is being made after a weekend where the country avoided an unprecedented surge in new cases is troubling. True leaders look to provide hope and encouragement in times of struggle and crisis.

“It is our Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, who has shown true leadership throughout this crisis, in both tone and action. As a doctor who came from humble beginnings, he has used his unique experiences to help shape the Government response to this unprecedented global pandemic. Using measured and consistent messaging and being straight with Bahamians, he has worked to unite our country in the fight to prevent the spread. He has been clear this won’t be easy and has also shown adaptability in assessing measures that need to be taken to better serve the public. This is a far cry from the effort of Brave Davis and his ally Chester Cooper, who are searching for the microphone and seeking to go it alone on offering criticism instead of working with the rest of the country to find both short-term and long-term solutions.

“It is not lost on the Bahamian people that it was only a few years ago when the PLP was in power and nearly brought us to fiscal ruin with their backroom deals and disregard for helping Bahamians. And while the reforms of the past few years re-positioned our country toward a better future, the hurricane last year and now the COVID-19 pandemic have served up a double, and costly, blow to our economy.

“It has been the Minnis Administration that has been open and honest about the uncertainty ahead while also showing the resolve to ensure the Bahamian economy and the country as a whole eventually emerge strong from these crises. And as we have said before, we are thankful for the leadership Prime Minister Minnis continues to demonstrate as he brings the country together in our fight to save lives while putting in place the efforts needed for a long-term recovery.

“It’s our hope that Brave Davis and his other PLP leaders put politics aside and come together with the rest of the country to win the fight against this deadly virus. The Bahamian people deserve nothing less from their elected leaders.”
