Nassau, Bahamas - Mrs.
Sabrina Skinner, Education Officer for Health and Family Life in the Department
of Education was recently recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club
of South-East Nassau.
Education
Officer Skinner was presented with a certificate, lapel pin and a medallion
following her address to the club. She provided a progress report on the Health
and Family Life Education teen pregnancy prevention programme “Baby Think It
Over”. Mrs. Skinner explained that the objective of the programme is to ensure
a decrease in the teen pregnancy rates among our adolescent population and to
get students to appreciate the challenges of parenting a child.
The
pilot programme of “Baby Think It Over” began in 2006 at the L.W. Young High School. Due to its success, the
Rotary Club of South-East Nassau purchased an additional 40 model babies to be
disbursed in three other New Providence
districts and in Eleuthera.
According
to EO Skinner, the programme has benefited the students in many ways. It has
curbed their desire to become teen parents. It has also increased their
interest to attend classes and actively participate. Finally, students related
better to the challenges of being parents because of having to care for the
babies in the programme.
