NASSAU, The Bahamas – Former Senator, the
Hon. Lawrence Hugo Glinton was laid to rest on Thursday, December 18. A state-recognized funeral was held at St.
Mary the Virgin Anglican Church on Virginia Street. In attendance was Prime
Minister, the Right Hon. Perry G. Christie who said that Senator Glinton was an
‘outstanding' Bahamian’ and a good man who served this country well.
“Senator Glinton was a good Bahamian who
never wavered or even blinked in the furtherance of his political commitment to
assist in the progress of this country, which he loved so much,” said Prime
Minister Christie. “I knew him, I respected him and I admired him.”
Mr. Christie expressed gratitude to the late
Senator’s family and said that he brought expressions of condolences on behalf
of the government and the Bahamian people.
Also paying a tribute to Senator Glinton was
leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis, who called the Senator
one of the ‘original freedom fighters’ for the country. Dr. Minnis reminisced fondly of his encounters
with the Senator and said that he would be sadly missed by the Free National
Movement party.

Senator Glinton was born on 9th September
1931 in Nassau to Ms. Althea Mortimer and Mr. Harry Glinton. He received his early education at the
Western Junior and Senior Schools and graduated from the Government High
School. He was married to Marina nee North and the union produced four
children, Debbie, Sonja, Byron and Larry.
He had a passion for gardening and
landscaping and in 1956, made it his career for thirty-six years. He was
responsible for landscaping The Cloisters, many of the intersections on New
Providence, and other landmarks throughout the country as the Superintendent of
Government Parks and Grounds.
Mr. Glinton was a historian, avid
photographer and collector of exotic fish but his deepest passion was politics.
In 1970, he was among the group of PLPs,
led by Sir Cecil Wallace-Whitfield, who became known as the ‘freedom fighters.’
He was also one of the founding fathers
of the Free National Movement. In l992,
after the FNM’s success at the polls, he was appointed to the Upper House
serving as a Senator from l992 to l997. During that time, he also served as
Chairman of the New Providence Housing commission and was appointed Meritorious
Council member of the FNM.
In June 2000, he was awarded Member of the Order
of the British Empire (MBE) for his service to the growth and development of
the country.
Senator Glinton quietly passed away on 9th
December 2014.
Cremation of the body followed the service.
