Prime Minister, the Rt. Honourable, Perry G. Christie, has proclaimed the week beginning 27th January, 2014, as “National Privacy Week,” with emphasis on, January, 28th, being celebrated as “National Privacy Day.”
The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner is charged with the responsibility of administrating and enforcing the Data Protection (Privacy of Personal) Information Act, 2003. Its responsibilities include promoting the observance of good practices by data controllers and processors, within the requirement of the Act, and influencing the thinking on privacy and processing of personal information on a local and global basis.
The week officially commenced with The Data Protection Commissioner, Mrs. Sharmie Farrington Austin, along with the Head of Cyber Crime Unit, Inspector Mark Barrett, making a special training presentation at St. John’s College morning assembly, Monday 27th January, 2014. The Data Protection Commissioner intends to visit several data intensive industries and bodies, throughout the week, including, a joint courtesy call on SouthWorth Consulting Ltd, Tuesday 28th January, a courtesy call to the Executive of BICA on Wednesday, 29th January, a courtesy call on the Haitian Ambassador, Thursday, 30th January, and the erection of privacy billboards on Friday, 31st.
The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner recognizes the pivotal role it plays in providing public education to the citizens with respect to the privacy of personal information. Towards, this end “National Privacy Week” will be used to address issues which affects, the use, collection and dissemination of personal data.
