At UNESCO courtesy call on Governor General His Excellency the Most Hon. Cornelius A. H.E. Desmond Edwards, Bahamas Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency the Most Hon. Cornelius A. Smith, Governor General of The Bahamas, on January 29th, 2020 at Government House, Nassau, The Bahamas.
Ambassador Edwards was accompanied by Ms. Deidre Bevans, Secretary General, the Bahamas National Commission for UNESCO, and Mrs. Naomi Taylor-Crawford, Chairperson, the Bahamas National Commission for UNESCO/Cultural Committee.
Matters pertaining to The Bahamas National Commission were discussed. Ambassador Edwards updated the Governor General on procedures for The Bahamas to have Junkanoo inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
Other topics discussed were:
• Assistance in upgrading the Parliamentary Channel through UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector
• Inclusion of Lighthouses of The Bahamas on UNESCO’s World Heritage Map
• Global Citizenship Education
• UNESCO’s International Jazz Day
• Emergency Funding from UNESCO
Ambassador Edwards also presented the Governor General with periodicals and literature pertaining to UNESCO’s five areas of competency, which are Education, Natural Science, Human and Social Sciences, Communication & Information and Culture.
The Governor General was pleased with the work being done and wished the Ambassador and the Bahamas Commission for UNESCO success in its various undertakings, through UNESCO in The Bahamas.
