Nassau, Bahamas - The beauty of The Bahamas surrounds us and for many local artists that beauty is the inspiration for much of their work. So when the idea to have an art auction was conceived, it seemed fitting to counterbalance the images of destruction by Hurricane Dorian with paintings of our beautiful country by some of Bahamas’s world renowned artists.
“We wanted to give artists a chance to help in Rotary’s fund-raising efforts,” said Christian Knowles a member of the Rotary Club of East Nassau who spearheaded the planning of the Rotary Clubs of the Bahamas Charity Art Auction. “And their generosity has been overwhelming with many of them creating unique pieces just for the Auction.”
The black tie event was held at the Nexus Club at Baha Mar on November 16 and featured paintings from Brent Malone, Rolfe Harris, Max Taylor, Amos Ferguson, Ricardo Knowles, Thierry Lamare, Jonathan Bethel, Stephen Smollett, Dede Brown, Tina Klonaris-Robinson, Sue Katz, Lynn Parotti, Toby Lunn, Dorman Stubbs and Maria Govan. The art auction was conducted by Nassau-based art appraiser and auctioneer, Jay Koment.

The organising committee was made up of Rotarians Barry Rassin, Lindsey Cancino, Leah Lowe, Jamal Rolle, Jane Martin and John Cox, Creative Arts Director at the Current, who gave invaluable advice to the committee and helped find collectors who generously contributed pieces towards the auction especially Andrew and Annie Rodgers from Nassau Glass.
The funds raised on Saturday will go towards rebuilding communities in Abaco and Grand Bahama and will be added to the $3,000,000 already raised by Rotary clubs locally and around the world. “Rotary International isn’t a first responder when disaster strikes, but as members of the community we always respond immediately. However, we are focused as a global organization to work for longterm solutions for communities after a disaster and tend to focus on the rebuilding of economic drivers,” said Barry Rassin, Past Rotary International President.
When Hurricane Joaquin devastated Long Island the Rotary Clubs of the Bahamas in conjunction with the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employer Confederation hosted a telethon to raise funds. Those funds were used to help the people of the southern Bahamas with rebuilding schools, repairs and inventory replacement for retailers, loss of vehicles, commercial freezers, coolers and water holding tanks. Approximately $1.2 million was used to assist the commercial fishing industry in Long Island.
