Nassau, Bahamas - ‘Lend A Hand Bahamas’ went from feeding hundreds of families in March of this year to now feeding thousands. And the number continues to grow as unemployment takes its toll on some Bahamian families and demand increases amid the coronavirus-driven economic decline.
Lucas Metropulos, a board member of Lend a Hand Bahamas revealed this information as the non-profit organization received a $12,500 donation from Consolidated Water (Bahamas) Ltd. (CWCO), which will be matched by The Lyford Cay Club Charitable Trust.
CWCO General Manager, Bryan Russell, noted that the reverse osmosis water supply company recognized the need for their corporate support.
"We discussed how best to help the many families struggling to make ends meet during these difficult times," he said. "We decided a financial donation to 'Lend A Hand Bahamas' would be well spent because we saw how much work they were doing in the community. Not only do we applaud their humanitarian spirit and tenacity, but also their sponsorship partnership with the Lyford Cay Club Charitable Trust that enables our donation to be matched, doubling the cash donation.”
Consolidated Water (Bahamas) Ltd. made a large financial donation that will help over 10,000 households with over 35,000 individuals receiving weekly food relief from ‘Lend A Hand Bahamas’.

Board member, Lucas Metropulos gave an update on the growing number of people that ‘Lend A Hand Bahamas’ feeds currently.
“As of this week, we will serve over 10,000 households in the downtown Nassau city zone which is over 36,000 individuals. In the communities of Adelaide, Mount Pleasant, and Gambier we are now supporting an additional 350 households, which is approximately 1,200+ individuals.”
The much-needed donation from Consolidated Water Co. (Bahamas) will support weekly disbursements of food parcels and vouchers. It will also go toward the ‘Lend A Hand Bahamas’ resiliency building educational programmes that they hope to implement in the near future.
Consolidated Water (Bahamas) Ltd. Accounts Manager Welliya Cargill made the presentation to ‘Lend A Hand Bahamas’ Programmes Director Mitsyann Burrows.
“CWCO saw the demand for food assistance increasing across The Bahamas due to the pandemic. We couldn’t just stand by and not help in some way. We're in this together and everyone needs help now and then. It means a lot to us to know we can help put meals on the table for families in need,” said Ms. Cargill.
A part of the National Distribution Task Force, Lend a Hand Bahamas is a zone leader in the most populous zone in the programme: downtown Nassau. The zone includes the areas of Bain Town, Grant’s Town, Centerville, Mt. Moriah, Engleston, Chippingham, St. Barnabas, Stapleton Gardens, Yellow Elder, Fort Fincastle, Montell Heights, Palmdale, Fort Charlotte, Millennium Gardens, Oakes Field, and Boyds Subdivision as well as the Nassau west communities of Gambier, Adelaide and Mount Pleasant. ‘Lend A Hand Bahamas’ initially planned to end its feeding efforts at the end of August; however, due to the escalating need, the organization hopes to continue through September and into mid-October.
