NASSAU, Bahamas - Local internet radio company Bahamas Soul Radio is making waves in cyberspace. Launched just six months ago by radio personality Sheryl “Sherry T” Beard and her husband, David, the company is averaging 400 hits per day on the site www.bahamassoulradio.net. Listeners from as far away as Estonia and Gibraltar in Europe and fans in the U.S. and Canada, tune in daily to hear the mix of R&B, Soul and Bahamian music online. People can also access the station on their mobile devices or in their vehicles.
The Beards said cost and the ease of new technology was behind their push to venture into the non-conventional approach to broadcasting. “Internet radio is the fastest growing radio listenership in the world,” said David, who spent the past five years amassing a collection of more than 98,000 tracks. “Our primary revenue stream is online advertising and globally, internet advertising has seen an annual increase of around 25%.”
As one of the first internet radio companies in the country, Bahamas Soul Radio is designed to uplift, motivate and inspire listeners. It also serves as a vehicle to showcase The Bahamas to the world.
"We are proud of our beautiful country and love sharing it with others. Our experience so far has proven that there is a great deal of intrigue and curiosity about these islands,” said Sherry T, a familiar voice in the Bahamian radio industry.
“We wanted to take this concept of “on the go” radio and use it to highlight the country in a positive way. Bahamas Soul Radio’s programming is fresh and exciting and attracts listeners from more than 110 countries.”

Daily programming includes a morning show, artist profiles and interviews, a showcase of Bahamian music, inspirational and jazz music. Sundays are dedicated to gospel music. In the New Year, Bahamas Soul Radio will add syndicated programs, a full jazz session and Motown evenings to the line up.
The online station is an opportunity for the couple, who met at their home church in London over 20 years ago, to bridge the gap between generations, cultures and communities. Their 19-year-old son, Joel, a sophomore studying Art and Graphics at
Uxbridge College in the U.K., built the site from scratch and helps to direct the technology for the company from his dorm room.
Bahamas Soul Radio is currently working on a back-up system to ensure continuous play on the station for up to three weeks without interruption. There are also plans to incorporate local video interviews with musicians on the site.
“It’s amazing how music has a connecting force,” said Sherry T. “Our listeners continue to tune in and give us positive feedback on how they are inspired by the work that we do and for me, that makes it worth it.”
