Exuma, Bahamas - The Island of Exuma is now poised to meet the challenges and opportunities of a resurgence in Tourism, with the establishment of the Exuma Community Multi-purpose Co-operative Society Limited.
With the assistance of Ms. Cheryl Bowe-Moss, Director of Society at the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources and Mrs. Joy Nichols, Senior Co-operative Officer, the Exuma Co-operative has brought together over thirty persons involved in Farming, Fishing , Arts and Craft and even bee-keeping.
The primary goal of the Co-operative will be to create opportunities to supply a wide range of products and services to the islands ever growing tourism sector.
Exuma has a long and enviable agricultural history, specializing in the crops such as onions, melons, citrus, peas and corn and the island once competed with Long Island in the production of mutton for the domestic market.
Farming went into a decline in the late 1980s for a variety of factors which included an aging farm labor population, outward migration, reduced tariffs on import farm products and outdated Farming techniques.
The industry is now being revived by a younger generation of professional farmers who come from a wide range of professional disciplines and who see the opportunities in supplying the domestic and tourism markets with quality, high end agricultural, marine and value-added products.
The newly installed Co-operative officers are:
Stephan Hall – President Bradley Charlton – Vice President
