The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is pleased to present an artist talk by world-renowned Haitian painter and sculptor Edouard Duval Carrie on Thursday, March 6th at 7pm.

Duval-Carrie was born in Haiti in 1954. Though his family was forced to leave Haiti more than twenty-five years ago, as the writer Matt Schudel puts it, Haiti never left him. His art exhibits a dynamic blend of Afro-Caribbean culture, fantasy, and spectacular ornamentation. Duval-Carrie’s works, much like his consistently changing surroundings, are a dynamic and colorful expression of a diverse past, that weaves together African fables, classic mythology, Haitian and world history with contemporary events. These themes reverberate at the heart of all of his work.

Duval-Carrie completed studies at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, Paris, France and University of Loyola Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He has been awarded residencies at Cite Internationale des Artes, Paris, France and Fondation Claude Monet, Giverny, France and honored by numerous solo exhibitions at museums and galleries such as Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville; Mackey Gallery, Houston, Texas, Arcaute Galeria, Mexico, Lowe Museum, Miami, Bass Museum, Miami Beach, Musee Pompidou, Paris and Musee du College St. Pierre, Port-au-Prince, Haiti to name a few.

A group of from the NAGB had the pleasure of visiting his Miami Studio during Art Basel 2005 and viewed the plans for the Cultural Center the Cty of Miami committed itself to building using his studio space as an anchor. This Center is on the verge of completion and the artist will not only speak about his work, but the vision he has for the future if this Haitian-Caribbean art space.

The gallery is extremely pleased that the artist has accepted its invitation to not only speak but to work with the NAGB inthe development of a Haitian Art exhibition for 2009-2010.
