Nassau, Bahamas -
The Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO) has selected The Bahamas to mark its 30th anniversary and to stage their annual conference and trade exhibition from August 10th – 15th at the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island. BTC, in partnership with the government of The Bahamas, is the co-host.
CANTO, founded in 1984, was formed to facilitate the development of the information and communications technology industry (ICT) for the benefit of members and other stakeholders in the Caribbean region; from an initial eight, membership has grown to 123 members in 34 countries.
BTC CEO Leon Williams is the MC at the Opening Ceremonies on Sunday August 10th at Atlantis and will also bring remarks; the Prime Minister, Right Honourable Perry Christie will give the Official Address to mark the conference open.
The conference theme, “Strategic Alliances for Sustainable Broadband Development” reflects CANTO’s current thrust to form strategic alliances to accomplish broadband infrastructural development throughout the Caribbean. A CANTO statement notes that there is an acute need for high-quality broadband in the Caribbean, especially that of a wireless nature as current demand far exceeds supply.
Leon Williams applauded the conference theme noting that broadband was the future.
“Wireless data is now experiencing mass-market adoption and growth is even faster than wireline, because not only are individual users consuming ever more data, but the percentage of users using mobile broadband is increasing. The result is a huge projected increase in data consumption as mobile broadband traffic continues to increase not just in The Bahamas, but world-wide.”
The conference offers a wide range of interactive work-shops and informative telecom industry sessions through August 15th. Monday morning opens with a LIME sponsored breakfast for Ministers of the Caribbean with responsibilities for tele communications. Cable & Wireless, operating services under the LIME brand, is the dominant telecom provider in most of the Caribbean regional markets, with Digicel and other players offering effective competition, particularly in the mobile telephony sector.
A private/public sector dialogue is organised for later in the day to discuss how the region could collaborate on making CARICOM a single ICT space, and a session entitled ‘Broadband for All’ will provide plenty of opportunities for attendees to express their views and to get information.
The packed CANTO agenda concludes with their 8th Annual Human Resources Forum on August 14th and 15th and their first of what is to be an annual Marketing Forum. Local marketing companies and personnel can register for this Forum which promises to be lively and creative with input from marketing professionals across the Caribbean and also providing plenty of networking opportunities.
The CANTO website, www.CANTO.org has full information on all the sessions and social activities and how to become an attendee and /or, exhibit in the Trade Show.
