Together for a Better Internet
Nassau, The Bahamas - BTC partnered with the Royal Bahamas Police Force and five top social media influencers to celebrate Safer Internet Day 2020 (SID). SID is annually celebrated worldwide, on the second Tuesday in February to raise awareness among young people, parents, teachers and the public about the importance of Internet safety. To commemorate SID 2020, BTC hosted two panel discussions with over one hundred primary and secondary school students.
This year’s Safer Internet Day theme is ‘Together for a better internet’, with the main objective to promote the use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.
BTC’s Senior Manager of Communications, Indira Collie said, “As the only full-service national telecommunications provider, we believe that it is our responsibility to ensure that our children are fully equipped to thrive in a digital environment, where technology plays such an integral part of their lives. It is important that we engage with them, especially at this stage, to encourage and promote the responsible behaviour that we want to see in the online space.”
The Company, along with others across the Liberty Latin America Group, took part in a series of awareness-building activities with customers, teachers, students, and the public to educate users about potential online risks and how to avoid them.
Several of the country’s top social media influencers including Ianthia Ferguson, Zhaneo Newbold, Tracey Ann Perpall (TAP), Steven Hanna and Aneka Stewart participated in the discussions. The panelists engaged students in a number of topical issues including cyberbullying, social networking, protecting your online reputation, being kind and respectful to others online and making good use of digital technology. Students also received tips how to develop lucrative careers using social media and gaming.
Queen’s College student Zuri Johnson said, “I like to visit YouTube and Netflix. Safer Internet Day is important because we all need to learn about this and stay safe on the internet.”
Royal Bahamas Police Force Inspector Leonardo Burrows reminded students that, “Technology allows you to keep in touch, but it has to be used in the proper way or it could get you into trouble. Remember that the police are your friends and if you are ever in doubt about anything, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. There are many good people in the world, but there are also bad persons who seek to prey on younger people. Remember to be wise – you are responsible for the content that you post.”
President and CEO of Liberty Latin America, Balan Nair, commented, “It’s hard to imagine life without the internet – it enables people, it connects people, and it helps people to learn, work, play, conduct business and even grow local economies and democracies. Through several initiatives across our region we will be supporting the communities where our team members live and work by providing educational materials and tools to raise awareness of the importance of digital responsibility. Safe use of the internet is critical for everyone, and as a provider of connectivity, we are fully supportive of this important global effort.”
Participating schools included Gambier Primary, Queen’s College, Eva Hilton Primary, Thelma Gibson Primary, Garvin Tynes Primary, Doris Johnson Senior High School, C.R. Walker Senior High School, C.V Bethel Senior High School and H.O. Nash Junior High School. BTC is looking forward to hosting another SID activity in 2021.
