Ministry appoints New Acting Director of Aviation

NASSAU, Bahamas  – Dr. Kenneth Romer was officially appointed today as the new Acting Director of Aviation. Dr. Romer who holds the position of  Deputy Director General of Tourism will also serve as  Acting Director of Aviation.  The announcement was made by the Hon. I. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation (BMOTIA) with effect from 31 January 2022.  

The Andros native, who began his career as an educator and was named the first National Teacher of the Year in 1998, has spent 15 years in the aviation arena.  He has previously served as Vice President of SkyVantage Corporation in Utah where he had direct oversight of airline partnerships in The Bahamas, the Caribbean, Florida and Europe; and Chief Operations Officer of Sky Bahamas where he was tasked with overseeing the day-to-day administrative and operational functions of the company. Most recently, Dr. Romer served as Executive Director for Product Quality at BMOTIA, with responsibility for, among other areas, airlift, cruise, yachting, visitor safety and special projects.

The Hon. I. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation commented on Dr. Romer’s appointment: “I am very pleased to appoint Dr. Romer as the new Acting Director of Aviation. He has an impressive professional record and brings substantial experience from the field of international and domestic aviation.  Adding to his expertise, Dr. Romer currently serves as our Deputy Director General, a post which will allow him to make critical linkages between all facets of our Ministry.”   

Dr. Romer who succeeds former Director, Algernon Cargill, said his vision for the Aviation arm of the Ministry includes creating a medium to long-term aviation strategy for The Bahamas.  “This appointment is important because it promotes the crucial linkage between tourism and aviation, and I want to bring a focused attention to the aviation sector by delivering heightened priority to domestic and international airlift to Nassau, Grand Bahama and our Family Islands,” said the Acting Director.

“My  passion has been the development of our country through the creation of meaningful opportunities for our entrepreneurs and stakeholders, especially those who are stakeholders in aviation,” said Dr. Romer.

Dr. Romer holds a Doctorate Degree with specialisation in Leadership and Organizational Management.  He also holds specialised certifications in both Contract and Aviation Laws from Harvard University; Private Pilot certification with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); International Air Transport Association (IATA) certification; Tourism, Hospitality and Travel Management certifications, among others.

Dr. Romer is married to Crystal and has two children, Kenedee and Harper.
