The new Permanent Representative of Panama to the Organization of American States (OAS), María del Carmen Roaquebert, today presented credentials to the Secretary General of the Organization, Luis Almagro.

At the ceremony, which took place at OAS headquarters in Washington D.C., Ambassador Roaquebert said that for her country “the OAS represents the main space for dialogue in our region; the OAS provides the ideal platform to jointly foster integral development with equity in the hemisphere; to discuss the situations facing our nations, from a position of rationality and respect for international law; and to generate the strategic alliances that benefit the men and women of the Americas.”

For his part, Secretary General Almagro highlighted the trajectory of the Panamanian diplomat, highlighting that she is the first woman to be the permanent representative of her country to the Organization. “We live in hectic times in the region and the world, and we need a country like Panama to defend the values of democracy and freedom in our hemisphere. We have a historical obligation to use all Inter-American legal instruments to return to democratic institutions in our Hemisphere,” said the Secretary General.

Panama entered the Inter-American system in 1905, just 2 years after achieving its independence.
