The New Permanent Observer of Spain to the Organization of American States (OAS), Carmen Montón, today presented her credentials to the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, during a virtual ceremony, the first of its kind.

Ambassador Montón announced that her country will continue to support electoral observation missions, the fight for women's political rights, the Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia and the OAS work on human rights, among other activities of the hemispheric institution. "The OAS takes on greater meaning and relevance in this unprecedented context of a pandemic. Spain is aware that the work of the Organization acquires renewed validity in favor of democracy, the promotion of human rights, integral development and multidimensional security,” said the Spanish diplomat.

For his part, Secretary General Almagro described the fact that Montón was the first woman to represent her country before the OAS as “historic” and added that Spain is a key partner for the Organization. “Spain plays a very important role in the majority of the activities that we carry out at the OAS. We have no doubt that with your presence we will continue to develop the close ties that unite Spain with the countries of the Americas,” said the OAS Secretary General.

Spain has been a Permanent Observer to the OAS since 1972.
