Nassau, Bahamas - The Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Immigration invites all students from the public
and private high schools to participate in an essay competition to
commemorate this occasion.
Essay Competition Rules
THE ESSAY
After viewing Sir Sidney Poitier’s films, Junior and Senior High School
students from public and private schools are asked to write a short
essay on the films, Sir Sidney’s life and his impact on The Bahamas.
Essays will be judged on the following criteria:
o - Creativity and originality
o - Grammar and spelling
o - Relevancy of response to topic
· Essays must be one- page, typed in 12 point Times New Roman font and double-spaced.
· All essays must be the original work of the applicant. All
external references must be properly cited, to avoid plagiarism.
· Applicants who go over the page limit will not be considered.
· Essays will be judged by officials at The Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Immigration and The Ministry of Education, Science and
Technology.
THE AWARDS
The winner of the essay competition
will be awarded five hundred dollars ($500) and will also get an
opportunity to fly to Los Angeles, along with a chaperone, to visit Sir
Sidney. The second place winner will be awarded three hundred ($300) and
the third place winner, two hundred dollars ($200). There will be two
consolation prizes of one hundred dollars ($100).
HOW TO ENTER
Applicants must submit their essay to The Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and Immigration no later than Monday 29 February 2016, 12 noon, to the
attention of Ms. Ieshia Deveaux. Essays can be emailed to
ieshiadeveaux@bahamas.gov.

envelope. Applicants must ensure that their grade level and school are
indicated.
