Big Brother Mentoring Program
This 100% volunteer based program has been active for several years and involves working with Bahamian Youth that are living in Columbus House for Boys and Girls. Columbus House is a government program for abused, trouble youth that need protection from their parents and under the protection of the Ministry Of Social Service. The government provides the basic needs of food and shelter and the Rotary program fills in the areas that are lacking in these children's lives if they lived in a normal environment with parents. The main goals of this program are to provide the children with positive adult role models and opportunities for healthy interaction outside their immediate living space. Every Saturday, adult volunteers take the youth out into the community to participate in various physical activities including Jujitsu martial arts, swimming, boating, exercise. In addition to the physical aspect of the Saturday outings, this program provides the volunteers with opportunities to work with youth on issues such as as self esteem, self discipline, respect, healthy and appropriate communication, and life skills ( i.e. resumes, employment opportunities).
Rotary Club Of GB Sunrise Big Brother Big Sister Youth Mentoring Program funds and has enrolled all of the Columbus boys and girls in a two time weekly after school Family Empowerment Youth Mentoring Program run by Rev. Wayne Carey. This program is an after school program which helps the children with life skills in conflict resolution and gives them the additional attention they need as they do not go home to normal parental environment.
The Big Brother Big Sister program also coordinates 1 to 1 mentors for the Columbus Youth whereby Rotarians volunteer to mentor to individual children to fill in the gaps missing without a strong parental influence.
The program been very successful and has helped make tremendous differences in the lives of these youths. Fund raising events like Cigar Nights help fund this valuable program.
The Rotary Club Of GB Sunrise appreciates your support.
